I have just had another look and now cannot see where I got the date 5th June from, but looking again I am wondering if it says 5th May just underneath and slightly to the left of the name Colegate!

Not too sure Diana. Unfortunately with the fire and water damage it may remain a mystery, But thanks for your help:)

thank everyone for your help, but I think we may have gone as far as we can with this one.:)

Family Search has this marriage:
Ann Colegate married George Rixen 1741 at Swanscombe, Kent.

Could this be them?

How on earth did manage to read the bit after banns Ma, I am i awe of you, thank you! And also for the rest of the info.
Bookworm thank you too!

Do you know? I actually saw it first because I wasn't looking at it, just getting ready to enlarge it. I was going to ask you to iron it if you had actual copy, but the 2nd copy didn't need it.
I then tried 'Irfanview' free to download but it told me no more than the above.

My 10c worth: I agree that the rector's name was John something (how Wendy deciphered a surname beats me!)

Might be safer to contact the Archivist or whoever holds the original PRs and ask them what they make of it, the entry might be clearer in the original PR.

Now I'm even more confused. Looking at Flook's link, before the year 1741 are the letters 'th', so I don't think the word 'May' is seen at all.
But the first entry on top of the page looks like 'by John ?aylor'? (married by) . I initially thought 'Taylor' but it seems to be a 'p'.
The entry before this Rixon one was '20? 1741'

A'sMum, I think you have it i'll give over 'Myer' to probable 'Taylor. As for the date-it appears to be entirely w/torn away leaving 'married by Banns by John ".." Rector.
http://www. british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=62822 :
["A memorial for John Taylor, clerk, B. D. rector of this parish, obt. Sep. 2, 1757, æt. 60, arms, ermine on a chief indented, three escallop shells, impaling a chevron ermine between three garles."]

John Taylor 1741 to 1760 -a clerk. http://www.fullbooks.com/The-Parish-Clerk-1907-6.html
Ancestry must have viewed another set.

Hi-lighted the name- picked out the bits & copy/pasted. Looked for same yesterday & missed it!! Only a different John popped up.

Another lesson learnt, thank you Wendy!:D I have also learnt that I need to be more careful when I cut & paste just parts of documents, to make sure I show any torn edges. Sorry guys:(

Thanks to all of you for your input on this one.:D
