Can anyone work out what the first two place in Suffolk are please, I've browsed a road atlas but no joy there. The places are from the 1861 Census for Little Leighs Essex and for Caroline Rodwell aged 3 born Little Leighs the daughter of George Rodwell age 32 (born in the first place) and Caroline age 41(born in the second place) the wife of George Rodwell.

Then I tried Googling various interpretions and got the following suggestions:-

For the first place Google suggested Tannington and Dennington.

For what looks like Arlsome (second place) Earl Soham was suggested, I can imagine that being so taking into account a Suffolk dialect.

So I would be very grateful for any thoughts/ideas.

Caroline Rodwell age 3 is I believe the Caroline Rodwell birth registered in the Chelmsford Reg Dist June quarter of 1858, Little Leighs was/is in the Chelmsford Registry district.

These do not belong to me they are the maternal ancestors of a distant Card cousin I'm helping or at least trying to, the idea being to give him a head start. :)

Can't win it if you're not in it, so here's a completely uneducated guess from me:

Tonnightan or Connig Man (neither of which seem to make any sense at all)
Arlsome
Althorne
Latchingdon

Might the 2nd name be same as 3rd name Althorne but misheard?
Haven't been able to twist my tongue for the first one yet.

This probably doesn't help but it has a list of place names in Suffolk

I think George Rodwell married Caroline Rackham or Caroline Sheppard. A Caroline Shephard was baptised at Earl Soham in 1821 according to FamilySearch.
Hope this helps.

Grateful thanks to all for the suggestions.

Being aware of country accents and the fact that the Essex Census Enumerator most likely wouldn't have heard of those two Suffolk places let alone know to spell them.

I'm going to settle on Earl Soham for Arlsome, I can well imagine Earl sounding more like Arl and Soham as Some, country folk were well known for dropping the h and putting where it doesn't belong e.g. Heggs and Honions as my Coggeshall born grandmother would say. :)

For the first name I'll settle for Tannington.

Thanks for that pointer Libby, I hadn't got round to thinking about Caroline Rodwells's parents, I might just give Family search a bash either today or the weekend.

The family certainly moved around a fair bit, a different abode in each Essex Census I looked at, ever edging closer to Sandon Essex where Caroline and her husband raised their family. Caroline married into my Card line, a sibling of one of my Card ancestors.

No Wendy, the third and fourth place names are Althorne and Latchingdon both are Essex places and located between Maldon and Burnham on Crouch, they are in an area I've heard called the Dengie Peninsular.

Did some work on the George Rodwell and Caroline marriage, as Libby stated Caroline could be either Caroline Shepherd or Caroline Rackham, the marriages of both Carolines were registered in the same year (1848), same quarter and same Registration District, Plomesgate which also includes Earl Soham.

Thought I'd check the 1841 Census to see which Caroline was in Earl Soham, Caroline Rackham in the 1841 Census for Suffolk was in Earl Soham aged 15 (= born circa 1826) and appears to be boarding with others, her occupation is listed as F S or H S so I guess House servant.

Of Caroline Shepherd baptised 10 June 1821 in Earl Soham (parents James and Sarah), the only one likely to be her in the 1841 Census for Suffolk is a 20 year old Caroline Shepherd living at a Farm, her occupation also listed as F S or H S so I guess House servant. The place stated to be in "the Civil Parish of Ufford in Wilford hundred.

Checking the age of George Rodwell's wife Caroline through Censuses.
1851 age 30 = 1821
1861 age 41 = 1820
1871 age 48 = 1823
1881 age 62 = 1819
1891 not found.

So at this stage it looks like George Rodwell married Caroline Shepherd but tomorrow I'm hoping to find out which other guy of the four shown in the 1848 marriage registration married a Caroline, then try and track them in Censuses to see if any clues emerge.

If anyone spots a problem in the above please let me know.

I'm pretty sure I've sorted out which Caroline married George Rodwell i.e. Caroline Shepherd or Caroline Rackham. The following is an extract from info I've sent to my cousin and his cousin's wife.

"In order to determine which of the two Carolines married George Rodwell I searched the 1851 Censuses for Suffolk to determine which of the other three males mentioned in the December quarter of 1848 in the Plomesgate Reg District had a wife named Caroline, it was Henry Harvey.

Checking Censuses for both couples, i.e. George and Caroline Rodwell, Henry and Caroline Harvey it showed that wife Caroline Rodwell was born abt 1819 to 1823 (ages vary from Census to Census).

And that the wife Caroline Harvey was born about 1826.

From Free Reg (online) I had already found (via Libby's heads up) Caroline Shepherd daughter of James and Sarah baptised 10 June 1821 at Earl Soham.

From Ancestry.co I found a Caroline Rackam baptised 29 April 1827 at Bledfield Suffolk the daughter of Samuel Rackam and Maria Curtis.

Therefore I think it’s fairly safe to say that Caroline Rodwell (wife of George Rodwell) was prior to marriage Caroline Shepherd and Caroline Harvey was prior to marriage Caroline Rackham.

For 100% proof though it would need purchasing a copy of the Marriage Certificate for George Rodwell or alternatively checking the Earl Soham Parish Marriage Register."

And that is where I think I'll leave it having given them a good head start with a line going back to James Carde about 1742 and his wife Rebecca Boyiten/Boyton born 1745 Braintree.

Note: From Chimp's contribution (post #7) it showed that Earl Soham, Bledfield, Tannington and Plomesgate are all close to each other, how convenient is that! :)

For Bledfield read Bedfield, not that it matters Bedfield doesn't have a part to play, not sure even why I mentioned it.
