Any Elstree Locals listening?

Ma-dotcom

A Bonza Little Digger!
Is there anyone familiar with the 'Elstree' district who can help me sort out an address please?
Electoral rolls for that time are awkward as two Woman named Sarah Stone are on same page one in Edgware & one in Elstree.
I can't make out the name with the street address but think it must be almost up to High St.Street address 1901 Edgware, Stone.JPG looks rather like Rosary.

I've just found my Gt, Grand Aunt whom I thought had died soon after a marriage in middle years. Probably was the Husband who died. I've also found her now on 1911 census in High st. Elstree.

I'm hoping this all will settle Sarah in my fils & may help me to find her demise.
thanks for reading. ;)

Not being a local ;) but the closest I can come is Rosary Priory, Elstree Road Borehamwood-Garston via Bushey..it was a bus route.

Thanks Sue, going on census image, there is only one more abode before High St.
Sch. no.63 Sarthellwyd or Sarthellward, Barnet Lane Housing sisters Sarah & Alice Tolman & Lodger Cecil Cosse-Cofse.
Then High St. addresses.
In the map the last building before High st. is now a Dentist & ?

I made the mistake of opening a pkt of Jonnys 'wickedly delicious' caramel flavoured popcorn before I sat down here, most diverting :D

Was just wondering about the last letter of the first word as the tail goes the wrong way for a 'y', but have no idea what else the word could be.

These ones were grand Victorian jobs......
Found, and I forget where now because I was just browsing...8-9 Barnet Lane is a listed building that was the police station at some time. Just an ordinary red brick building. Depending which way the numbers run you may get some idea.
Found it. 8a & 8b Barnet Lane.

I had a great time today zooming up & down Barnet Lane, no numbers for my Aunt's addy in census or electoral registers. I stopped at High St intersection because of the way the census read. Saw some beauts up the road a way.
Gotta stop now, seem to have very sticky fingers on left hand. ;) Boy they is so good, [popcorn]

This is becoming a problem I must solve.
In 1881 Sarah was a Domestic cook in Elstree for John Spurgin [Occupation: Curate Of Little Stanmore (M.A.) Assistant Master At Elstree School]@ Scopwick ? House

Preston Bagot, Cook for Edward Chaytor, Rector of Beaudesert.

1901 back in Elstree I can imagine her giving her house the name 'Rosary' if indeed that is correct.
Having toured around & searched electoral & census rolls I'd like to find the right house for Sarah on Barnet Lane, [2 miles from Rosary Priory which becomes Watford Rd. on other side of High st.]

@AM, how did you discover the former Police station, & on which side of Barnet Lane was it? Not having any street no's so far I'm a little lost.

Almost ready to email Elstree Counil offices & see if they can help me find the house/s I seek, :D or maybe a Realtor! They seem to be busy in the area.

In the same area, britishlistedbuildings.co.uk has 1,2,& 3 Barnet Lane as Grade 2 listed. They are listed as 'Yew Tree Court, Barnet Lane'.

Just found the Police Station. It's directly opposite Summer Grove and the above grade 2 listed houses I believe are just towards High Street from there. Maybe the black and white ones. So you might be looking for one of the other little houses just around there somewhere. There's not many to choose from, they are quite cute.

Found the former Police bldg. 3rd one back from Yew Tree Crt. away from High St. part hidden behind some lovely trees.

May go house hunting for me.:( we have an everlasting fright night here.

There is a 1914 map of Elstree here:

Now I don't know if this is going to help or just confuse things, but there's a bold dash/dotted boundary running along Elstree High Street, Barnet Lane, etc. It looks like the parts of Elstree to the north and south of this line are in different administrative areas and different census enumerators' books.

The parts to the south are covered by the census enumerator's book you were looking at, Wendy, which is labelled on the front as being for Edgware civil parish, Hendon registration district.

The parts to the north are in Elstree civil parish, Barnet registration district, in a census enumerator's book beginning on RG 13/1229, f.5, p.1.

So at least you know which side of the line your building was on . . .

P.S. for comparison there is an 1890s map here:

Just a thought...

Kelly's Directories not only had residents (head of households) listed in alphabetical order with their addresses, but also had the abodes listed street by street. This latter would have house numbers (if available) but also house names. Perhaps an email to HALS would result in a look-up for you. I know that they have those directories as I have seen them myself!

Also, perhaps a contact with Chris at the Genealogy in Hertfordshire website (one of our linked websites ;) ) might prove fruitful.

Jane a wonderful double find there, thank you. I had no luck with early maps yesterday & these two seem to suggest the two joined houses are the ones in census, one of which housed my G.G.Aunts, & compare well with today's Google Earth etc views.
They even show the area where in 1881 Sarah worked in Schopwick.
Yesterday just got a lot better

To my shame Jan, I didn't think to look in Kelly's or any Historical Directory. Things & thinking seem to get thicker when doing ones own searching.
Thank you very much. Both the above will get my attention. Perhaps then I shall deserve to go out today for A'noon tea with pals.
