Looking for any BENTLEY connections at Burley, Rutland apart from the baptism of John's daughter Mary in 1800, I have come across the burial in the parish register of Burley on 31 August 1782 for a Mrs Elizabeth BENTLEY. However, that appears to be the only other Burley connection that I can find to your BENTLEY family in an appropriate timescale. I then thought of looking through apprenticeship records for your John BENTLEY, Carpenter, but again not much luck with that either apart from the fact that he is recorded as being a Carpenter of St James Westminster who took on a James SHEPPARD as an apprentice on 27 August 1796 but have had a singular lack of success in finding a likely record for his own apprenticeship. Were there any helpful witnesses on his marriage record to Rosetta FRIEND or have you had any success in finding the marriage licence record??

Janet

Thank you for your hints! I shall look into them! Marriage record witness for John Bentley and Rosetta Friend Eling Hampshire was John Wolfe and Samual Purkins! I did find a John Wolfe in Eling but no connection to Bentley or Friend surnames?

Hamstall Ridware is a parish in Staffordshire about 9 miles north of Lichfield which is where daughter Jane was baptised in 1812 - John moved about quite a lot didn't he. This could be a total red herring, but there is a baptism at Longdon St James, Staffordshire, close to both Lichfield & Hamstall Ridware, on 25 March 1756 for a John BENTLEY son of Joseph BENTLEY - no that is no good as he was buried in 1757. However, looking for any BENTLEY connections to Hamstall Ridware, there is a baptism at Hamstall Ridware on 11 September 1705 for a Joseph son of Ralph & Esther BENTLEY of Yoxall. Later baptisms at Hamstall (from the PR Transcripts) show a George son of William BENTLEY baptised on 14 September 1755, James son of William & Mary BENTLEY baptised 30 May 1763. There is a marriage at Yoxall on 1 September 1745 between a William BENTLEY & a Mary DANN or DUNN followed by the baptisms at Yoxall on 27 May 1746 of a son Joseph, Thomas on 5 September 1747 and William on 1 April 1750. I wonder if William BENTLEY had a brother George, as there is a George BENTLEY married to a Catherine who had 2 sons baptised at Yoxall, William on 27 May 1746 and Joseph on 3 July 1750. This George left a Lichfield Will dated 27 September 1758 and proved on 19 November 1759 in which he stated he was a Carpenter of Yoxall and left bequests to his sons Robert, William, Joseph & his wife Catherine whom he also made his joint Executor together with a Mr Robert WRIGHT. As I say all very circumstantial but if a some of John BENTLEY's relatives were Carpenters it might explain why I cannot find any apprenticeship records for him although I still have not found a baptismal record for him. Thomas the son of William BENTLEY left a Lichfield Will dated 17 September 1801, he also being described as a Carpenter.
