Descendants of Isaac BAILEY, 1787-1863

My initial reaction was one of annoyance at such bad manners, particularly when one takes into account the sheer amount of verified information that was copied, some of it was my efforts but a lot of it came from the hard work of forum members. It actually felt like I had undermined your expertise as, no doubt, the person concerned will assume it was all “me”. I have a mind in future to possibly add a “found by” credit to any documents not discovered by me.

I can understand making one’s tree private, or indeed keeping it purely on hard disc at home but for the time being I will leave things as they are as it seems incongruous to do otherwise.

Correct me if I am wrong, but if I were to buy a computer based family tree program, would I not then loose “hints” and other advantages from Ancestry UK ?

Family Tree Maker software used to, but it was bought from Ancestry and I'm not sure if it still does. Have a google would be the best way.
 
It looks like Ancestry bought FTM, have since stopped selling it and now sold it to a company called MacKiev but it's looking like it isn't currently compatible with Windows 10, so I'm stumped anyway :(
Having sold it, there is now no guarantee that a furture version will work hand in hand with Ancestry.
Just a thought, in theory there is now nothing to stop Ancestry preventing past versions working with their on-line database either ?
Seems that whatever one buys nowadays is soon out of date :(

Though it's now not my main genealogy software I have a past version of FTM and that still works with Ancestry. My new software gets hints from FMP, (not the reason I got it), but I must says that the hints I get quite amaze me a lot of them makes me really wonder just how their system works!o_O

I've got a tree on Ancestry that when I first put on there a number of years ago I made public. Oh the innocence of a beginner! It was quite some years later that I discovered that people had copied parts and on 2 occasions the whole of my tree. Right or wrong I have now made it private. I've had a number of people contact me over the years, not through Ancestry, and we have shared information back and forth, no worries. :)
 
The same thing happened to me in the early days. I was upset to see my Grandparents photos on complete strangers trees, especially as it was first copied by a 2nd cousin who never responded to any of my attempts to make contact. Now my tree is private but I have still made interesting contacts since. And all those copyists have not benefitted from the corrections I have been able to make as more information became available.
I have a very old version of FTM which I use for producing reports etc but I do need to update as it is on our old PC which still operates (just) on XP but is no longer connected to the Internet.

I have come across several Ancestry trees in parallel to mine that are publishing family photographs in abundance but (to me) it doesn't seem "right" to copy them - a headstone I don't have a problem but to copy personal pictures just doesn't sit well with me.
That's not to say my parents and grandparents pictures haven't been used on trees whose owners have never bothered to introduce themselves !

Cannot answer for Ancestry, if you are no longer a member but two tree packages I have RootsMagic & Family Historian now offer connections to others looking for same people as in your package, annoying really- nothing is private any-more even if you buy it to use on your own computer. Got to wonder if they also flog off info to anyone who wants it.

edit: usually means you must join whichever company has the connecting persons.

Roots Magic are currently working on getting hints from Ancestry in their program just as they do now from Find My Past, Family Search and My Heritage and are working on Syncing with Ancestry.

According to one of the inflation calculator sites that would now be £30,278,297.87!
Mind you, I have no idea how accurate those things are and I'm not enough of a mathematician or economist to judge.
 
I do understand people's frustration when all their hard work is nicked by ungrateful people on sites such as Ancestry. I have suffered from this myself.

However, this wonderful site is also open to a similar sort of thing I think. Google a more unusual name (in inverted commas) eg "Mary Badger Bailey" and this thread comes up at the top of the list and then all the helpful information here is available.

Mind you, in some circumstances that's not a bad thing as a distant family member (one I didn't previous know) was able to contact me as a result of googling a name I'd mentioned in a post here. It has led to a fruitful exchange of information about various ancestors which has been to my advantage more than his I think.

.... Five grand would probably be a mere bagatelle in in this ancestor's pocket change but would work wonders now :(
How times have changed !
