Do you think I have the right man?

Half your luck you get post that quick!!:)
That's because of those who do everything on line and those that don't, have to wait because 1/2 the staff at Australia Post got laid off. And the price of a postage stamp skyrocketed so we could all wait twice as long for our birthday cards.........

Ours is not too bad usually 8 days wait from UK, but when the post person finds our letter box opening not as wide as one card envelope did he/she have to fold every one of them in half to fit through?

I found a report in the papers 'Welsh Newspapers Online'

The Brecon Radnor Express - Thursday, 1st March 1917
A gloom was cast over the district when it became known that Mr T. W. Goodwin (lately foreman for Mr. A. H. Wainwright) had died at Oswestry on Wednesday. He had been very popular in the town, and had only joined the colours about three weeks ago. He leaves a widow, two children and an aged mother, for whom widespread sympathy is felt. The remains were conveyed to Knighton on Monday under military escort and with military honours, and the funeral (a full account of which will appear in our next issue) took place on Tuesday.

I have tried searching for the next issue but can't seem to find it. Anyone?

I found it here, but can't seem to access it!!

Thanks ladies, I have just gone through the papers 8th, 15th and 22nd and there is not a mention of the funeral

I have now received the birth cert for EPHRAIM TUDOR.

Date of birth: 20th May 1880
Place: Workhouse
Father: ----
Mother: Mary Ann Tudor (domestic servant)
Informant: Mr. Mason, Master, Union Workhouse, Hereford.

Well that tells me a lot doesn't it

Did she ever apply for Parish Relief as a single mum? If you can access the Poor Law Pay book for the Parish, she may well have named the father.

Also, Ephraim's baptism might show a helpful clerk having written, "purported father to be...." or similar.

Just a thought... :sceptical:

William Mason was still the workhouse master in 1881 there is info here http://herefordshirepast.co.uk/buildings/hereford-workhouse/

I looked for a suitable Mary Ann Tudor in 1881 and there was only a Mary of the appropriate age (24 - born Marden) RG11/2906/10/14 a cook , working for Peter Davies in Burford
So I looked for her in 1871 - RG10/2695/42/6 sees an 11 year old Mary Tudor d/o Thomas and Eliza in Marden.

Now this might be a complete red herring, but... 1881 census
RG11/2592/54/10 Inn Row, Wellington, Herefordshire
Mary Ann Tudor b1876 Holmer, Herefordshire adopted daughter of Mary Ann Baily (b1854 - Marden), who is listed as wife of signalman, but he is not present, + 2 infant Baily children (GRO lists mmn as Williams).
Thomas Bailey married Mary Ann Williams June qtr 1875 Hereford 6a879.

So is this another child of Mary Ann Tudor? - if so we know which parish to check for a baptism (not that I can find Hereford PR's online).

Thank you MM, I have to agree, Hereford is poorly covered when it comes to records on line. I wonder if Ephraim was baptised in the workhouse.

Could this be same Mary in 1911?
