Someone in my Facebook Genealogy Addicts group posted a link to this forum, and it looked like a nice place to hang out.

My parents started researching genealogy when I was a teenager, and I joined in as an adult. There are still a few mysteries in my own family tree, but then I got married and had a child, and had a whole new family tree to research. I get the impression that this is a somewhat British Isles-focused group. My own ancestry from that area is so far back in time as to be very hard to research, but one set of my husband's great-grandparents were raised in Staffordshire and Durham, respectively, before marrying and emigrating, ultimately, to Alberta, Canada. (I haven't managed to get those lines figured out any further back than about 1800.) Not to mention some Scots in another one of his family lines who emigrated to Jamaica.

Anyway, I've only just arrived, so I need to take a look around now.

Although there is a lot of British Isles research going on, we have members all over the world. You never know.... You could end up asking a question about an ancestor from Jamaica and receive a reply from Canada! :D

Your Facebook contact wasn't wrong - this is a very friendly place. Plenty of expert help and local insight etc, but all very informal, and there's always time for a bit of fun.

True, a large proportion of our queries do relate to the British Isles, but our members are worldwide, and interests and expertise likewise.

I think what Chimp meant was that we don't guarantee to find missing ancestors. I don't think he'd dare say we weren't friendly and knowledgeable...:D
 
Welcome in Rebecca, C|:-) a Cousin of mine [ x 3 removed ] went to Utah on the Monarch of the Sea in 1861, died 1899 in Mount Pleasant, San Pete, Utah. just down the track a bit from you ;)

p.s. it is a nice place to hang out. :D

Utah is a nice place to live, but I'm a recent arrival myself. My parents were from Kansas/Missouri, and I grew up primarily in California. I only came to Utah after I got married, about 14 years ago.
 
Now your Family history changes that little bit. It's great to be able to move about from place to place, but can be hard on children of school age with all of the changes. Who knows where you might be in another 2 years? :)
 
Welcome Rebecca (lovely name, Rebecca. I have one ;) and as I heard the other day, you can never get angry with someone called Beckie :))
Also have a few in Utah from about 1850's. I'm sure you will get a kick out of joining us. Lots of work done researching and lots of cheeky fun as well.

Welcome to the group, Rebecca. I live on the edge of Toronto, Ontario and my husband grew up in Jamaica, so any questions you might have on the Island, just fire away. I also have relatives in PEI, Alberta and BC and the "super sleuths" on this Forum tackle every question or country. Plus we have a lot of fun!!

PS....when we were in Dumfries, Scotland, my husband was amazed at how many well-known Jamaican names were on the tombstones in the High Church there. His own family came there around 1800.

Be warned, you may post a query and we end up going 'off-piste' - the mods sometimes wrap knuckles but all taken in jest.
