I have been given permission by John (now 86 years old) to post in the hope of tracing his past. John was born in April 1929 to a lady called Mabel Parry at 202 Wolverhampton Road Cannock Staffs (Ivy House 'The workhouse'). He was placed in a childrens home in Cannock at the age of 3 and later transferred to Lichfield Childrens home under the care of Mr and Mrs Furber. I have helped John over several monthe sto try to find out more about his background but we havent been able to establish very much. He doesnt think he has any surviving relatives but would love to know more about his placement in the homes. Can anyone help?

The above link tells you about the workhouse, if you scroll down the page it mentions what happened to the place in 1930.

Having searched the census records I have been able to find Johns grand parents and his mother and sister on the 1901 census. However by the 1911 census John had a new auntie but the previous one had disappeared from the records. Does this mean she died? If so how can I check

Do you have the census reference for this so that we may have a look at who we are searching for, please? :)

via FreeBMD, I've not found a death to match Sarah a. & would need to know her residential area to guess at one of the many marriages.
Likewise for Lily.

Apologies if this is the wrong Family.

Only 2 births for the name Mable Parry on FreeBMD this looks the most likely one as the other is in 1889

Births Dec 1/4 1895
Mable Parry - Pwllheli - Vol No. 11b, Page no 365.
(this would make her 34 in 1929)

or did his mother have a middle name, are there any records for John as if he was fostered or adopted there should be something somewhere

I no longer have a sub to Ancestry but this looks a likely person to investigate

It would help if Jules could tell us the census she found John's Mother Mabel on, is it the one above? if offers two different Dtrs in the Family who would have been Aunts to John.
Finding Mabel's birth etc hinges on which birth year we work on & was she born in Crickhowell area or somewhere else.
# 7 & 8 if correct show the Mother b. Wednesbury but I haven't found her as such before 1891. Dtr Lily b.Hednesford Staff'shire,=

I was thinking the same thing places to far apart, in those times folks didn't go to far from home, although I posted the Births I found on FreeBMD for Mable parry I know not all are transcribed yet so there may be more.

We really need a reply from Jules

In a touch of the desperates I contacted Hednesford Council Library to see if the Family were still at 1911 address for many years after 1911.
Instant reply:
Electoral registers did not begin until 1949, local directories between 1914 & 1939 do not show all residents who may have lived there.
Hazel Slade area was not large enough to have an entry before 1938, when a different Family lived at 17 Cannock Wood Rd.
A Mr W. Parry lived Station Rd Hednesford in 1922-that address in 1911 is for a Mr William Waterworth.

A William Parry died at Cannock in 1949 aged 78 which is within age range for the William in above censuses.

From post #11, FreeBMD shows that Lily Parry's birth was registered in the Cannock district in the first quarter of 1903.

Unfortunately the General Register Office (GRO) birth indexes, which are the basis of the birth index on FreeBMD, do not show mother's maiden name until 1911. That makes it harder to pick out siblings or to track back to a likely parents' marriage without paying for certificates.

For some areas, though, indexes to local registrars' records are online and some of these indexes do give mother's maiden name. One such local BMD website is Staffordshire BMD:

http://www.
staffordshirebmd.org.uk/

Many of the birth entries there don't give mother's maiden name, but luckily the one for Lily Parry does: her mother's maiden name was Boulter. That would fit nicely with the 1891 marriage found by Ma-dotcom (post #8). On the 1911 census William & Mary Parry say they've been married for 20 years so that would tie in very well with the 1891 marriage.

Note also that they say on the 1911 census that they've had 3 children and all are still alive. Only Mabel and Lily are with them, so the other must still be around somewhere.

NB that on the Staffordshire BMD site, Lily's birth is shown as being in 1902, whereas in the national index on FreeBMD her birth registration is shown as being in the first quarter of 1903. Presumably the Staffordshire BMD site is indexed according to the actual year of birth, whereas the GRO index is according to the quarter and year when the birth was registered. Births didn't have to be registered immediately, so a birth at the end of 1902 might not be registered until early 1903.

Thanks for that clarification Jane.
I wonder why no birth shows up for a Mary Boulter? either 1860-69, yet FreeBMD has a Mary reg'd 1866 & a Mary Jane E 1867.. both W.Bromwich.

Also saw on Genes Reunited that there are 2 or 3 possible contacts for w of these Family names.
So, do 'I keep on keeping on' & contact one of them or just drop it.?

Will ponder after breakfast which I have almost missed.

Thanks Jane, may just 'drop it'; & concentrate on 'Trove' & 'National Archives' transcribing.

Less h'aches.

So sorry I have not replied to these. As I am new to the site I thought all messages came via e mail and have only just realised I need to log into the site so please accept my apologies.Yes the line being followed is correct. John knows his sister Lil was 14 years older than him so has difficulty understanding how he came to be placed in the workhouse with his mother? He really wants to find out when Mabel was placed in the workhouse
