KEMP Family

SURFING TRAGIC

New Member
Have found on Irish Genealogy a baptism record for Elizabeth KEMP dated 30 April 1858 Dublin RC St Mary Pro Cathederal = Father Robert Kemp and mother Elizabeth Mc Vicker - 156 Townsend St North Dublin with an Anna Howard as sponser.
From my Scottish side from Edinburgh I have many Roberts in my past family as well as children with Mc Vicker (Mc Vicer) , Anna and Howard in their names and have records to show many were in Dublin Ireland during the 1856 to 1865 period ( Robert Kemp and Janet Mercer who gave birth to Anna Kemp in 1862 and RobertHenry Rutzou Kemp who was born 1864 )before they came to Australia.
My trouble is I have no records of Elizabeth KEMP being born or parents Robert Kemp / Elizabeth Mc Vicker from 156 Townsend St, Dublin North.

On the Baptism record it gives a date of birth of 11th January 1858

This from the GRO

In Ireland, the General Register Office (GRO) is responsible for maintaining official records of births, deaths, and marriages, providing access to these records for public research.

Overview of Births and Deaths in Ireland

General Register Office (GRO): The GRO is the central repository for civil records in Ireland, including births, stillbirths, deaths, marriages, civil partnerships, and adoptions. It has been maintaining these records since 1864 for births and deaths.

So Birth records only started in 1864 that is why you were able to find the birth record for Robert Henry Rutzone Kemp but not for Elizabeth as she was born prior to the birth record inception.

Edited to add - Prior to 1864 the records were kept by the church, the church were only interested when you interacted with them, ie. Baptism, Marriage and Burial. They weren't really interested in Births and Death's.

Robert Snr had a sister Eliza McVicar Kemp born 25th August 1836 who married Ferdinand Rutzou. This is probably where Eliza McVicar Kemp born 1857 got her name from, and Robert Jnr got the 3rd name Rutzou from.

Chimp - thank you again - yes all of those are part of my family and have them on the
Code:
https://www.kempfamilyhistory.com/
web site, Family Tree Maker and find a grave.
They are all part of the Kemps that went to Ireland from Edinburgh Scotland around 1857 and that is what got my interest up when I found the Baptism record for Elizabeth with the parents Robert Kemp / Elizabeth Mc Vicker from 156 Townsend St, Dublin North.
Although they were catholic and my Scottish Kemp's protestants, they all lived within a block or two in Dublin plus my Kemps all had the names McVicker, Anna and Howard (the sponsor) as part of the children's names.

My TOTAL GUESS is that Robert Kemp / Elizabeth Mc Vicker had moved to Ireland from Scotland as Catholics were not very popular at the time especially if related to Robert Kemp (1) / Janet Mercer who were protestant.
This Robert (1) and his father Robert were part of a Masons lodge in Midlothian.

My QUEST is to find out if Robert Kemp / Elizabeth Mc Vicker & child Elizabeth from 156 Townsend St, Dublin North are part of the Kemp clan, and if they are, Irish by birth or from Scotland.

I also believe a lot of Kemps were located at Cork in this period, and several came to Australia as part of the English army, but yet to investigate if any connections with my Kemp's.

I have searched everywhere I can think of worldwide for another Robert Kemp / Elizabeth Mc Vicker combination but have found nothing only the one you found in 1858. Sorry

Thank you for all your efforts - so close but so far away.
Must be a link but unless it can be verified just a thought.
Have a safe 2026 and keep up your fantastic contributions to family research.

Even though I couldn’t help you you’re very generous with your wishes. Just wish I could have helped. I detest brick walls.

You have a fantastic 2026 too.
