Mary Ann ASHTON, formerly [name] ?
Any ideas, bearing in mind "formerly" does not necessarily mean "maiden name" ?
Later census (for ASHTON) show she was born 1847 in Kinver, Staffordshire.

Mc ??? on - were there any children registered so you could look at the GRO index for help?

I was thinking Mc[something] possibly ending "ison"
Don't seem to be able to find a marriage for Mary Ann to James ASHTON so can't check it that way.
The pic is from her daughter's birth cert (Gertrude Ashton, 7 Feb 1882, Warrington).
No baptisms found for other children Elizabeth (1869, Kinver), Mary Ann (1870, Kinver), Polly (1871, Kinver), James (1873, Kinver) so no joy there either.

Mary Ann Ashton age 0 on the 1871 census was baptised to a James Ashton and Mary Anne in Kinver. Marriage to James Ashton and Mary Ann Wilkinson at Kidderminster March 1868. So I believe the name to be Wilkinson

Just came back to say I found all that on good old family search. Mary Ann the baby was born 2 May 1870 and christened on 3 July 1870

I could not find birth reg's for Elizabeth, Polly or Mary Ann
but James* (Mar qtr 1873 Sheffield 9c 524) Ernest* (June qtr 1875 Sheffield 9c 368) and Ada (Mar qtr 1882 Warrington 8c 195) all show mmn as Wilkinson

* 1891 census give pob as Sheffield

Ah ha:) - this looks like Mary Ann June qtr 1870 Wolverhampton 6b 487 mmn Wilkinson

Whoops:oops: Ada was 1884 (no 1882 as per :oops:post#7) district volume and page numbers are correct - sorry

Mmmm, I have come upon easier lines to trace so I'm grateful for all you have found, especially "Wilkinson" (I was convinced it started with an "M").
The whole family seems a bit illusive with a distinct lack of flow (not enjoying this one, roll-on G&T time).

Very odd family, Mary Ann alone with the children in 1871 and 1881 (as head, wife and widow:rolleyes:).
I do wonder if Polly in 1891 is Mary Ann's pet name

There is a bap in Kinver 22/12/1868 for an Edith Ashton d/o James and Mary Anne (born 4/8/1868) of Foster St. and James is a forgeman - the same occ as on Mary Anne's bap in 1870
The is a note saying "recieved 3/7/1870" - the same day as Mary Anne's bap

There is a birth reg for Edith Ashton Sept qtr 1868 Wolverhampton 6b 453
mmn Wilkinson - so is this Elizabeth from the 1871 census?

Mary Ann as a widow in 1871 & 1881 has had me confused for quite some time as I have James on the marriage cert of Gertrude in 1903 and it doesn't say that James is "deceased". I even started searching criminal records at one point in case he was "away" for a while.
I can't find a death for Mary Ann or James either.
The whole family all looks very disjointed and illogical.

It's one of those that I have left (for longer than I care to remember) and come back to - James & Mary Ann are my illusive maternal great-grandparents.

James ASHTON 1843-?
Mary Ann WILKINSON 1847-?

Children:
Elizabeth 1869-?
Mary Ann 1870-1951 (married Edgar PEARCE)
Polly 1871-?
James 1873-?
Ernest 1876-?
Gertrude 1882-1945 (married Richard W WRIGHT) .... my grandparents
Ada 1884-?

There is a death reg for James Ashton -
Warrington Sept qtr 1904 8c 161 age 61
Warrington Dec qtr 1906 8c 161 age 63

both fit with age 58 on 1901 census

In comparison with Smith, Jones, Davis etc this should be reasonably straightforward but with dates and places flitting from one to another, obvious gaps and no definite path, I can see now why I previously set it aside.

It doesn't help when Kidderminster is sometimes listed as Staffordshire and sometimes its shown to be in Worcestershire !!!

So far I have had no luck in finding any of them post 1901 census

I did come across a bap of Mary Ann Wilkinson in Kinver

31/5/1846 at Kinver St Peter
Mary Ann d/o Benjamin (labourer) and Mary

I can only find two births and baptisms that may or may not fit. The first of course is Mary Ann 1870 and the other is an Edith born 4 August 1868 baptised 22 Dec 1868 parents of both are James and Mary Ann Ashton and they were baptised at Kinver. Family Search. I'm wondering if the Elizabeth post #15 was actually the Edith 1868
