Mary Nye

I think I found my Charles Nye in the Launceston Invalid Depot (Asylum) in 1884 approx age between 67-70 years old. I did my research on this place and it would not have been nice especially during the heat of summer , Jan to March ) He was in for about two months. It then led me to a death in the depot at age 72 in 1886. I might have to work backwards.
 
Yes. That’s him. Found him earlier. Great info on that site. Don’t forget to check out Trove advanced Search newspapers. A bit on him there as well. I think he got a bit naughty again later on in life.

He also married Mary Adams in 1844. Permission to marry 1843. Earlier a permission to marry Eliza Tucker in 1842 but she seems to have settled on someone else.:rolleyes:
 
2 Mary’s, no wonder it’s confusing. I had a breakthrough for the first time in 20 years. I found a baptism, Charles seniors parents, And his convictions. I’m sooo excited. I’m in my phone at work at the Moment but I’ll share tonight

If you have found the same....baptised 1812 Cuckfield. Son of John and Catherine. Father was a cordwainer Charles himself a shoemaker. Native place Cuckfield transported at age 20 in 1831. Fits beautifully.
 
Now. Mary Adams. Arrived on the Garland Grove, farm servant and dairy maid. 10 year sentence. Born Ripon Derbyshire, married Charles in 1844 but after her CP left on the Yarra Yarra on 20 January 1853 as Mary Adams. Leaving Charles to marry Mary Fleming in 1854. Whether or not he married bigamously I’m not sure. She may have deserted him years earlier. Which is probably what happened.
Now to sort out Mary Fleming.
 
That’s very interesting, they must not have had children of their own. Family rumors are he wasn’t a nice man? I cannot seem to find the newspaper articles on trove, I mean I’ve found some relating but not the naughty ones you mentioned
 
Just a couple of bits from the papers
Sussex Advertiser 26th April 1830
County Hall - Charles Nye, convicted with Frederick Jenkins, of stealing at Newhaven, divers money, the property of William Stone. Three months to hard labour, last fortnight solitary.

Brighton Gazette 28th October 1830
Lewes Quarter Sessions - Charles Nye for stealing at Brighton, one gown, a shirt and two handkerchiefs, the property of James Chapman. Transportation for life.

I can't find any more details about either case
 
29/12/1851, conditional pardon retended, Charles Nye- Argyle. I have no idea what that means.The Cornwall Chronicle 3/1/1852
Charles Nye arrested on warrant was charged by his master Mr H D Parr with having absented himself from work without leave. The charge was allowed to be withdrawn. Launceston Examiner 8/4/1873. This is long after Charles was granted a conditional pardon in 1851 so what did he do to have been working for a master in 1873. In 1857 he was a constable. Something has gone wrong in the meantime.
Ah ha. He was transported for life so he wasn’t able to get a conditional pardon. Is that it? Life was life back then.

Roebuck does not appear to be a Sussex name, more likely Yorkshire.
Probably a servant employed locally but from away.
Cannot see John Nye in apprentices list.

Hi Burt, where did you find this information, I’m on ancestry but cannot find it even entering all names ‍♀️
 
Family Search. As a member of Sussex Family History Group
I have access to their indexes of Baptisms, Burials & Marriages
as taken from all the individual CDs of parishes originally
produced by the Parish Register Transcription Society.
I have the vast majority of the CDs, but not Cuckfield.
It seems the index is not yet complete as I cannot find
either John or Catherine's burials as yet ( to determine
their years of birth). The CD for Cuckfield can be purchased
through Genfair.
The coverage for Cuckfield is fairly poor. Not on FreeReg or
Sussex online parish clerks.
 
It appears to me that John Nye and his wife Kitty/Kate/Catherine
moved to Brighton where a google search shows him as a
cordwainer in 1834. Search 'john nye shoemaker cuckfield'.
Also picks up a useful bit from rootsweb.
Kitty Nye is in the 1841 for Brighton
and burial of a Kate 1850 there aged 74.
Daughter Kitty married William Shelley there in 1817, but
husband remarries late 20's.
Son George is there in 1851 as a bootmaker.

i will have a play around tonight. At least we know we are on the right track.
I wonder if any photos will surface.
does anyone recommend the Ancestry DNA?
