Matthew & Mary Ruff birth 1866 1865

Have we discounted the Mary Roberts, daughter of Robert Robert and Maria (Richards), a Tailor?
The family can be found in 1881 at 1 Albert Road, Oswestry (RG11/2659/7/6). Robert b1823 Frankton Shropshire
Their daughter Mary (no Ann) birth was reg June qtr 1866, which fits with a February birth.
I have had no luck in finding Robert and Maria in 1891 and 1901 - I did find a death notice in the newspapers for Robert, who died 3/10/1901 and his address was Albert Road. I cannot find the address in 1901, and in 1891 a David Roberts was living there.

Added - just read Janet's post above - it seems we are all struggling but thinking on similar lines ;)

Will get back to this later on.

Glad it's not just me being unable to find a baptism that seems to fit MM! I can only find one likely Robert ROBERTS in census records and he is a Tailor and not a Labourer as is shown on Mary Ann's marriage record. I wonder if her father's name was put down incorrectly on her marriage record as the 1871 census record that MM found previously fits in other respects - birth year, place of birth, and father a Labourer. By the 1881 census of Pant, this Mary ROBERTS is no longer living with parents Thomas & Margaret, so could be one of the Servants that MM found in the 1881 census. Just found a birth registration on the GRO Index for a Mary Ann ROBERTS in the March qtr 1866 at Atcham reg district, mother's maiden name HUMPHREYS. Have to go out now, but perhaps this is worth further investigation?

Thank you so much Janet, this is something for me to investigate , one of Mary and Matthew’s direct grand children is still with us, and she doesn’t know Mary’s maiden name, it’s all very bizarre .
Grandad did tell me, he said it many many years ago , was very random .. my trouble is I can’t remember if he said Roberts or Morris , I’ think Roberts ..
I’ve never ever been in such a dilemma .
Thank you so very much for all your help ❤️

Hi lovely I will have a search , see if these details lead me to pinning her down. I think I did dabble in the Maria finding , can’t remember why I deleted it, I must of hit a brick wall somewhere . Anything is worth a try .
You’re right :) we are all struggling with dear old Mary .
Appreciate so very much all your help ❤️

Looking further into any other ROBERTS children with a mother's maiden name of HUMPHREYS there is an Alice registered at Atcham in Sep qtr 1864, died Dec qtr 1864, a George registered in March 1868 and an Elizabeth in June 1870. Looking for George & Elizabeth on the 1871 census brings up a Benjamin ROBERTS married to a Mary (marriage registered in June qtr 1859 at Madeley reg district of a Benjamin ROBERTS one of the other two names being that of a Mary HUMPHREYS) with children Edward, Sarah, Thomas, Mary Ann, George & Elizabeth living at Church Preen, the interesting thing being that Thomas & Mary Ann are both shown as being born in Eaton under Hayward which apparently is part of Church Stretton as is Church Preen, where your Mary was resident at the time of her marriage. Of course I could be clutching at straws here!! I cannot find any of the family in the 1881 census with any certainty though. Lovely picture!

I think we can eliminate the Robert Roberts and Maria's daughter Mary (she is at home in 1881 but has occupation servant).
I have found her baptism and it gives her dob as 19/5/1865 baptised at St Martins Oswestry 11/6/1865
Apologies her birth was registered in June qtr 1865 not 1866 as I put before.

This might be Mary in 1881 - Western Farm Oak Cottage, St Martins b1866 Oswestry - general servant
Head is Sarah A Wilkinson b1844 Birmingham, and living with her is her brother Robert D b1848 St Martin's Oswestry

I think they are in Canada:( Ontario District 135 East York - Mary (now widowed) and the children Sarah, Thomas, Mary, George and Elizabeth.

:headbang:
I know that some of Mary and Matthew’s children emigrated to Canada funnily enough .. they had 14 children I believe.. Alice married a davies , my grandad Alfred ruff lived with us, William lived in dorrington, many of their children stayed local, 2 emigrated to Canada. Grandads brother Charlie , ( Matthew and Mary’s son emigrated to Idaho )
Thank you so much for helping

That rings true , the one Mary Roberts I found still lived at home at age 40.. Mary married Matthew age 21 I believe. Oh wow !! So pleased you’ve found her Baptism.. they’ve made a mistake on the census , putting her birth at 1866 .. I’m so very excited you’ve found that Molly I seeing light at the end of the tunnel very excited by this. Thank you ❤️

There is the baptism of a Mary Ann Roberts, born 24/12/1865 baptised 3 June 1866…image available on Shropshire Parish Registers, Family Search Centre and affiliate libraries. Mother Mary and father Benjamin Roberts. A tree on Family Search has her sister Sarah marrying James Coggins in Toronto and brother Edward dying in York Ontario.

It seems Benjamin, Mary, Edward 13, Sarah 11, Thomas 9, Mary (Ann) 6, George 4, Elizabeth 2, and Suzy 6 months arrived on SS Scandinavia from Liverpool 11/6/1872. Address Toronto according to an application and certificate of residence, for refund of Emigration Bonus.

Thank you so much for looking for me, Mary is a real mystery . Will try this out in ancestry .. I keep hitting a brick wall with her .. I know that a couple of her children my great uncles emigrated to Canada .. I shall be investigating this. Thank you ❤️

Benjamin Roberts, Yeoman, died in York Ontario 3rd March 1874 of consumption. Informant was Mary Roberts.
2 of my grandads brothers emigrated , Canada , Idaho .. I often wondered why they did .. maybe emigrating was to follow family . My grandad Alfred Ruff was Mary’s son.. frank and Charlie ruff emigrated , my grandads brothers. Will check out what you’ve found . It could be why I keep hitting

if this is the right Mary , she would of come back to church Stretton Shropshire to marry Mathew ruff 1887, she was 21 when married I believe . My grandad passed away in the late 80’s I wish I’d asked him , he didn’t speak of his family very much. Anything is worth a try.. she’s the toughest cookie to pin down ❤️
a brick wall .

Definitely worth looking in that direction, I always thought it was odd that my grandads brothers emigrated, they both became big farmers, maybe family over there , or left land in a will maybe.

Not sure about this line of investigation as another tree has this Mary Anne Roberts marrying Edward Crozier in Toronto in 1886 1931 census has the Elizabeth born 1870, age 61 housekeeper for the daughters of her sister Sarah Coggins/Goggins in Toronto. Sarah died age 37.

Definately not your Mary Ann, father Bejamin and mother Mary Humphries. The above seems to check out as being in Canada married to Edward Crozier.
