Matthew was the son of Daniel West (1801-1874) and Sarah Lock (1802c-1882) married 2/1/1827 in Teddington Middlesex
He was baptised in Twickenham 17/7/1843 (birth reg June qtr1842), and appears with the family in
1851 - HO107/1698/557/37 in Twickenham
1861 - RG09/776/71/16 in Twickenham
He turns up in 1871 as a Butler b 1841 Twickenham working in Aldershot Hants - FMP have mangled the transcription and he is listed as a housemaid
RG10/817/66/22

I cannot find him after this - can anyone else?
 
as the family he was working for were from France maybe he moved there with them. Charles Doridant died in 1885 in France.
 
the son William ( age 1 on that census) was at school in Kent in 1881 and married an Alice Mortimer before emigrating to New Zealand, so no help with him. There were other children listed on the death entry for Charles bit I didn't note them.
 
I’ve tried but come up with nothing other than in 1881, a Matthew West, a coachman, born in West Drayton, married to Elizabeth with a baby son, Fredk. Wm. Osborn West, living in Earle Colne, Essex RG11/1802/92/14. I’m pretty sure it isn’t him, West Drayton is about 9 miles ftom Twickenham but at least it’s in Middlesex :rolleyes: :D
 
Thanks Ann, yes West Drayton is in Middlesex:D and not that far from me and Twickenham as well, but I had followed this Matthew and in 1891 he is with his mother Mary in Willesden (and some of his children), so definitely not my lad. That said, I never found a birth reg for this Matthew. Mine is the only one registered in Middlesex +/- 2 years.

Just filling in a quiet Sunday and found William Arthur Doridant in New Zealand as a Corporal in the New Zealand Military police. He died in 1944 age 74 and Alice died in 1926 age 55. However looking around I came across a very old enquiry from a person who was researching her Doridant ancestors. She had found a letter addressed to William Arthur d’Oridant of New Zealand from his mother, Adeline d’Oridant and her address was Villa Madonna, Menton. The letter was dated 23/3/1890 and she was telling him she wished to sell the estate. The researcher was wanting to know where this villa could have been. In an answer from another on the board he states that the D’oridant family purchased the Palais Carnoles-1717 from Prince Antonio of Monaco and they turned the chapel and convent into villas.. Menton is on The French Riviera. So maybe your Matthew could have gone with the family to that part of France and stayed there.

No trace of a Matthew West in 1891 of this age anywhere in England. Maybe this is him after returning from France! Adeline was selling the France property in 1890. She was Adeline Painter before marrying Charles d’Oridant so maybe she moved back to England.

The background info is fascinating, and I am leaning towards (well putting it in notes as a possible explanation) that he did got to France with the D'Oridants.
I had not seen the 1897 death, so that too is a possible.
 
So, Charles D'Oridant died in France but he was on his way 'home' to Aldershot Park in Hampshire when he expired. This from the Folkestone Express 13th June 1885
DEATH OF MR CHARLES DORIDANT. We regret to have to announce the death of Mr Charles Doridant, at Paris, on the 2nd inst., at the age of 71 years. Mr Doridant will no doubt be remembered by many as the proprietor of the Pavilion Hotel for many years, during which time he was noted for his kindness and charitable actions. He was retuned as a member of the Town Council for the East Ward in 1862, and in 1863 he was elected Mayor, which office he filled until 1865. He was again chosen as Mayor in 1868. On the 14th February, 1871, he resigned his seat in the Council on leaving the town to reside at Aldershot Park. During his term of office as Mayor he presented the town with the handsome jewel and the first three links on the Mayor's chain. On the back of the jewel is the following inscription "This jewel and the three first links of this collar were presented to the Mayor, Aldermen, and Burgesses of the Borough of Folkestone by Charles Doridant. Esq., 1867." He also presented the Corporation with the handsome Mayor's robe, which he had worn during his term of office. Mr Doridant had been to Mentone for some time past for the purpose of recruiting his health, and was on his way home to this country when his death occurred. The funeral took place on the 5th inst., the services being held in the English Church, 5, Rue d'Agnesseau, and the interment in the Cimetiere du Sud (Montparnasse).

Not that it helps in any way to track down the elusive Matthew West :sceptical:

Charles Painter was also executor to Charles D'Oridant's will - I wonder how much money a Turtle Merchant made,

Plenty apparently. He lived at Aldborough Hall. Adeline’s son couldn’t have been left too much because he was always in court in NZ for something or another. He was Military Policeman, a fisherman, manager of a refrigeration company and a pool hall owner.
 
Adeline’s son is seen in St Martins in the Fields in 1891 as a visitor along with Alice. They married in Dec 1890 in St Pancras so I guess he went back to England to marry her and when there his mother died in France. There was a lady from Nottingham who was looking for him in NZ and I think I read that he had deserted her some years before. She went by the name of Maude Doridant but I can’t find a marriage for them. Still nothing concrete for Mr West except maybe that death in 1897.

She is a different lady. I found her in 1901 as Maud d'Oridant born 1870 Kensington. Living with Jack Bamford 30 and Wellie Bamford 14 in Nottingham I have a feeling that Wellie or Willie might b William d'Oridants son and he took off to NZ. She states on the census that she is widowed. She is definitely the lady looking for him. Maybe she wanted money when she found is mother had died. Who knows.
