Paeleography and geography

Some of our words are used more than once to mean different things. Take for example 'yer'

What yer were you born. yer = Year
Over by yer. yer = Here
I have a yer on each side of my head. yer = Ear
and finally yer. yer = Your

I think I may have mentioned this many moons ago, but the British Library has a whole section on dialects, including this which gives illustrations of people from various parts of the UK talking in the dialect of their area.

Including the village where my great grandmother was born and brought up !
Absolute magic.

also noticeable amongst the Cockneys

With Cockneys the word out is pronounced art, I was friends with a guy with a cockney accent his surname was Smith and he was from Bethnal Green so it was Smiff from Befnal Green.

I was lucky through my job in Hoffmanns and @ year nation Service to hear all sorts of accents, from various parts of Britain and Europe, it was very useful later on.

With Cockneys the word out is pronounced art,.
Having been brought up in South West Essex, I believe that "art" needs some fine tuning. The "a" should be drawn out as "aa" or "ah" and the "t" cut short using the glottal stop. Another example of the cut short "t" is "The water in Gibraltar don't taste like what it oughter".
There is always the white liquid miwk.

Brings to mind the lovely cooking people on t.v. these days. I once got annoyed at every thing being 'beautiful', but got over it. Now they are "happy with that" all good, "that's just how it should be" well done them, BUT now I keep waiting for any of them to "I'll just go in with this", before finding the pot isn't big enough for grown folk to get in. I'm ready to commiserate but so far no one has kept their word about 'just going in'. :D
