Portsmouth customs officers

There is a burial in St Mary’s Portsea for a Mary Carter (Cater) 24/12/1812. A possibility maybe. Found on FS no other details and not on Find a Grave.
Mmm nobbyclark has burial 18/2/1823. He's pretty good with his research but place is London Middlesex, that doesn't seem to stack up.

Note Mary's father Richard served on HMS Victory, he is listed in UK Naval officer and rating service records 1802 to 1919.
The reason I ask is that there is a tree on Family Search with Mary Dormer 1809 and Jane Jewell 1811, their mother Mary is said to have died in 1823. However in 1815 there is a marriage of Richard Cater, widowed and Jane Dormer also widowed St Mary’s Portsea. Jane Jewell Cater is baptised 17/8/1823 but born 20/12/1817, father Richard Cater and Jane, another non conformist baptism I’m guessing. Jane Jewell Cater married William Lewis 9/5/1850. In 1841 Richard Cater is living in Gloucester Street Portsea, age 67 with Jane Cater 55 (?) and Margaret Jewell 80 (mother in law?)
In 1851 Richard Cater 78 head, Jane Cater 75 daughter Jane Lewis and son in law William Lewis.
The death of Mary, Richards first wife must have been well before the marriage in 1815 if he married again in 1815. Looking in Portsea, the Jewells and Dormers all seem intertwined. There is a marriage in 1804 of Jane Jewell to Isaac Dormer and I’m again guessing that this is the Jane Dormer who married Richard Cater. I’m hoping all this might lead to the Clark’s.
I have Jane Jewell Cater born 1811

All sounds plausible.

We need a marriage of Richard to Jane (Dormer) /(Jewell).

Jane daughter of Richard and Mary Blake born 1811 but baptised 17/8/1823 after the burial of Mary Blake 18/2/1823. So again plausible.
Post #32 I mentioned a marriage in 1815 of Richard Cater to Jane Dormer. ;)

Can't thank you all some much for all your help it's amazing. I've learnt more in 2 days than years of my own research.

That said I'm still trying for any info on Henry James Clark born approx 1791/2. The earliest info I have is Assistant Clerk to Customs Portsmouth 1806.

I'm trying to get an address or parents, something to narrow the search on FS.

I've discovered that Customs Outport books for each Port are stored in the UK National Archives in Kent. The Outport records for Portsmouth are identified as CUST 58.

Has anyone had experience researching such books. I have had some wonderful help from a website which provides a lot of information on Cowes Customs Outport CUST 61, where Henry is found 1849 to 1847.

Wow new info discovered. Isaac Dormer and Jane Jewell had a daughter Mary Ann Dormer. Mary Ann Dormer marries George Charles Andrews. Richard Cater marries Jane Jewell. That makes Mary Dormer Carter and Mary Ann Andrews stepsisters. George and Mary Ann Andrews were the witnesses at Henry James Clark and Mary Dormer Carter wedding.

Wow Clark, Cater, Dormer, Jewell, Andrews tighly knit.
