Sarah Moore/Beer - born ~1849 Kingsbridge Devon died 1913 Sydney, NSW Australia

Hi,

I would appreciate some help with another slippery/confusing person in my family tree. She has been posted about elsewhere in other forums, I hope that is ok.

- Sarah Ann Beer married Simeon Jennings in Braidwood, NSW in 1874 (NSW BDM ref 1983/1874).
- Sarah Ann And Simeon had children in Echuca, Victoria, and Braidwood and Wagga Wagga in NSW.
- I suspect that Sarah Ann Beer and Simeon Jennings may have (informally) separated by the early 1900s.
- Sarah Ann Jennings (nee Beer/Moore) died in 1913 in Newtown, Sydney NSW (Ref 3269/1913, parents John and Mary Susan). Her death certificate confusingly gives her parents as John Moore and Mary Susan Moore, gardener of Kingsbridge, Devon’.
- I haven’t been able to find a Devon birth for Sarah Ann Moore with parents John and Mary Susan Moore born in Kingsbridge, Devon between 1845 and 1855.
- There is a Sarah Ann Moore born 24 Jan 1849, Kingsbridge Devon (UK Civil BDM Vol 9, p425). This Sarah Ann Moore was born at Kingsbridge Albion House, Churchstow to single woman Mary Moore, who registered her birth (making her mark).
- The 1851 UK census has a Sarah Ann Moore, aged 2 as a ‘lodger’ at ‘Sutton Hamlet’, South Molton, Devon in the household of George Pereaton (aged 52, born South Molton, Devon, ag lab), his wife Harriet Pereaton (aged 45, born Stockenham, Devon) and their children Louisa Pereaton (aged 18, born South Molton) and Hannah Pereaton (aged 7, ditto ).
- I can’t definitely place this Sarah Ann Moore (b1849 Kingsbridge/South Molton) after the 1851 census, nor her mother Mary Moore.
- In terms of the John Moore (gardener) and Mary Susan Moore who are listed as her parents on her death certificate,
- the 1881 census has a John Moore, gardener born ~1807 Brixham Devon living at South Molton Devon, husband of Sarah Mooore b~1811 South Huish and living with granddaughter Elizabeth Jane Moore, aged 15 born East Allington, dressmaker.
- This family I think are in South Molton in 1851, with John Moore as an ag laband their son James Moore b1843 South Molton.
- in 1861 John Moore, b1808 Brigham Devon, ag lab and his wife Sarah Moore b1808 South Huish living in South Molton, living with ‘father-in-law’ William Diamond (aged 76, widower, born Devon, no profession).
- in 1871 John Moore b1808 is a tailor living South Molton with wife Sarah Moore and father-in-law William ‘Dymond’ aged 84, born Bovey Devon, ag lab

But I’m not 100% this is the right ‘John Moore’ and given Sarah Ann Moore b1849 appears to have been illegitimate, the people listed as parents on her death certificate may be her grandparents or other relatives, or just made up?!

No sign of a Sarah Ann Moore marrying someone called Beer and becoming a widow before she ends up in NSW marrying Simeon Jennings in 1874. To confuse things further, I have more than 40+ DNA matches to descendants of Phillipa Beer (daughter of William Beer and Elizabeth Cook) b1815 Devonport, Devon m. John Rowe Moyle (1808-1889) died 1891 Alpine, Utah!

Edited to add - I would appreciate help with:
- tracing Sarah Ann Moore born 1849 Kingsbridge to single mother Mary Moore forward in time, to confirm or eliminate her as ‘my’ Sarah Ann Moore/Beer/Jennings,
- tracing single mother Mary Moore forward in time.
- clarifying relationships (if any) between the Pereaton family and Sarah Ann Moore b.1849
- clarifying if the John Moore b1808 Brigham m. Sarah Diamond/~Dymond is any relation to Mary Moore who had Sarah Ann Moore in 1849 at the Kingsbridge Albion House Churchstow.
- What the Beer relationship may be given DNA connections
- Sarah Ann Moore/Beer/Jennings’ travel to NSW and if she came with any relations.

I have downloaded the birth certificate for Edward Simeon Jennings, son of Simeon Jennings and Sarah Ann Beer/Moore Jennings b. 13 March 1876 at Mitchell St, Echuca Victoria (Vic BDM ref 1222/1876). This says that Sarah Ann was 25 at the time of Edward Simeon’s birth, maiden name Beer and her birth place was ‘South Milton’ Devonshire, England.

Possible sighting on the 1871 UK census: 6 Hare Street, Woolwich: Sarah Moore, unmarried; aged 19, drapers’ assistant, born South Molton Devonshire. Living in the household of George Robinson aged 32 born Boston Lincolnshire, Draper, his wife Matilda aged 25 born Strood, Kent and their two children George H. And Susannah Robinson b.1870-1871 Woolwich, George’s mother Elizabeth Robinson, widow aged 72, born Boston, Lincolnshire. At the same address: Naomi Hudson aged 24, u/m drapers assistant born Clapton Surrey, Martha Boston u/m 27 “ born Longbottom, Lincoln, Sophia Hudson u/m 20 “ born Clapton, Surrey, Mary Oates u/m 18 “ born Gunwalloe(?) Cornwall, Julia Tice 20 u/m “ b. Western Troyland Somerset, Jane Knox 16 u/m “ born Epping, Essex, Alfred Tyfield 22 u/m “ born Chichester, Sussex, Edward Pickering 18 u/m “ born London, Sarah Ingate, servant, u/m 21 born Great Wigboro, Essex and Elizabeth Asker 16, u/m, servant b. Rochester, Kent.

Being a drapers assistant would fit with Sarah Ann Jennings’ later occupation as a dressmaker (which she passed onto her daughters.

Edited to add first page of household

My bad - I didn’t realise that there is a ‘South Milton’ and a ‘South Milton’ both in Devonshire. Given that Sarah Ann Moore/Beer/Jennings’s death certificate said she was from Kingsbridge, Devonshire and info on son’s birth Victorian birth certificate, I think that South Milton is probably correct, rather than South Molton. That might make the 2-year old Sarah Moore boarding with the Pereatons in 1851 less likely.

The John Moore b~1807 Brigham/Brixham Devonshire married to Sarah Nee Diamond/Dymond are in the 1851-1881 UK censuses at South Milton, Kingsbridge not South Molton.

John Moore married Sarah Dimond at All Saints Anglican Church South Milton, Devonshire, banns date 24 February 1850.

This means the James Moore born ~1843 (son of head of household) living with John Moore and Sarah Nee Diamond in South Milton in 1851 is either a child from an earlier marriage, or was born out of wedlock.

You do make things difficult! Been on this most of the day and like you can find nothing Moore/Beer. Unless her parents changed their name to Beer from Moore for some unknown reason.

John Moore b~1807 Brixham Devonshire may have been married to a lady also called Sarah prior to his marriage to Sarah Dymond/Diamond in 1850.

In 1841 UK census for South Milton:
- Head of household John Moore born 1806 Devon
- wife Sarah Moore born 1806 Devon
- daughter Mary Moore born ~1831 Devon
- son William Moore born 1834 Devon
- son John Moore born 1837 Devon
- daughter Sarah Moore born 1834 Devon
- Joseph Moore born 1839 Devon

He was indeed married previously

South Milton All Saint's Banns - 10 Mar 1850 (3rd reading)
John MOORE, Widower - of South Milton
Sarah DIMOND Sarah - of South Huish

I think his first wife may have been Sarah FINCH whom he married in Thurlestone on 25th March 1830

Looks like John's first wife died on 13th April 1844 of general dropsy aged 40, wife of John Moore, agricultural labourer of South Milton.

Although you haven't mentioned a James Moore born 1842 he can be found on the 1851 census living with his parents (father and step mother) living in Milton Village, South Milton, Kingsbridge, Devon

Oh you did mention a James in your post #5

Thank you both for checking :) And yes some of my ancestors are infuriatingly vague and inconsistent!

Chimp, did the John Moore widower marriage 1850 to Sarah Dimond/Dymond happen to give his parents’ names?

There is a John Moore b. 31 August 1806, baptised 21 Nov 1816, son of Nicholas and Honnor (sic) Moore at the Wesleyan Chapel Brixham, Devonshire. Nicholas Moore’s profession is ‘mariner’.

Edited to add - looks like Nicholas and Honnor Moore went for a package baptism deal on 21 Nov 1816!

They had four of their kids all baptised on the same day at Brixham - as well as John above there is:
- Joseph Moore b. 6 Dec 1809
- Agnes Bowden Moore b. 11 Jan 1809, and
- Benjamin George Moore b. June 3 or 8 (overly swirly writing!) 1816

All good :) Nicholas Moore, potential father of John Moore looks to be in the Kingsbridge Union Workhouse, Churchstow in 1851. He is listed as being aged 72 (so born ~1779), born at Plymton, married, a sailor. But doesn’t look like Honour Moore nee Bowden is there with him.

Honor (b.1776) is with her widowed son Nicholas

Following on from what Chimp has found for you, one of the witnesses at John MOORE's first marriage to Sarah FINCH is a Nicholas MOORE who is likely to be a relative. This Nicholas MOORE looks to have married a Mary LUCKHAM at South Milton on 8 March 1829 judging by comparison of the signatures on both marriages and one of the witnesses to Nicholas's marriage is a John MOORE. Baptism at South Milton on ? November 1801 for a Nicholas son of James & Sarah MOORE but I cannot find a the baptism of a son John to this couple although they did baptise a son Benjamin (amongst other children baptised there) on 23 November 1817 at South Milton. James MOORE married a Sarah DATE at South Milton on 7 March 1795, both being of the parish. He signed and she made her mark. If you can access FindmyPast records, they have quite a few parish register records for South Milton.

FMP have three British Merchant Seamen records dated 1835 for a Nicholas MOORE born c1779/80 which state that he was born in Salcombe.

Children of Nicholas Moore and Honour Bowden (married 1801 Dartmouth):
- James Moore baptised 24 October 1802 at St Petrox Dartmouth, Devon. Married Mary Ann (surname unknown). Living in Torquay in 1851, occupation cordweiner with wife Mary Ann (aged 44 born Taunton Somerset) and children Edward John Moore, aged 11 born Soho Middlesex, Charlotte Ann Moore aged 4 born St Martin’s Middlesex and Anna Maria Moore aged 2 months born Torquay.

In 1861 James Moore is a boot and shoe maker employing 3 or 2 men, with wife Mary Ann Moore, daughter Charlotte now aged 14 and visitor Martha Griffith (aged 78) living at 48 Pembroke Square, Kensingston, Middlesex. In 1871 James is widowed, a shoemaker living with his brother Joseph Moore (aged 61, unmarried, a navy pensioner) at 12 Sutton St Kensington. I can’t find him anywhere after the 1871 census so he may have died between 1871 and 1881?

Given the Thurlestone link, there is a baptism there on 21 June 1778 of a Nicholas son of John & Ann MOORE - perhaps a possibility? However, I have also just found a baptism at Dartmouth on 26 October 1804 for a Nicholas son of Nicholas & Honnor MOORE & he is living in South Milton in the 1851 census which is the record that Chimp found for you, so it looks as if the Nicholas who was the witness at John MOORE's first marriage is his brother, who himself married Mary LUCKHAM in 1829. A Mary MOORE was buried at South Milton on 7 October 1832, she dying of Cholera, aged 24. Ann MOORE was baptised at South Milton on 9 January 1842 the daughter of Nicholas & Jane MOORE, so did he remarry? There is a marriage at Plymouth St Andrew on 18 July 1833 between a Nicholas MOORE & a Jane SARAH, his signature bearing a remarkable resemblance to that of the marriage in 1829 to Mary LUCKHAM.

2nd child of Nicholas Moore and Honour Bowden;
Nicholas Moore baptised 26 October 1804 at St Petrox, Dartmouth. This is probably the man who was a witness at John Moore’s wedding to Sarah Finch, and also who Honour Moore nee Bowden is living with in South Milton in 1851. He married 3 times 1) Mary Luscombe 8 March 1829 in South Milton, they had one child Joseph Henry Moore b. 1830 Devon but Mary died in 1832. Nicholas remarried to Jane Sarah in 1833, and they had four children: George Moore b1834, Mary Jane Moore b1836, Nicholas Moore b1837 and Ann Moore 1842. Jane Sarah then died in 1843. Nicholas Moore remarried a third time to Ruth Ryder in 1854. Nicholas Moore, wife Ruth and his daughter Ann look to have moved to Northamptonshire by 1861, where Nicholas is listed as an ‘Eating house keeper’ where they remained until Nicholas’s death in 1884.

In

Child 3) of Nicholas Moore and Honour Bowden:

Joseph Moore b1809 Brixham, Devon. According to the 1871 census, Joseph Moore was unmarried and a navy pensioner, living with widowed brother James in Kensington, Middlesex.

Child 4) Of Nicholas Moore and Honour Bowden Agnes Bowden Moore b11 Jan 1812 Brixton, Devon. Is appears that she never married

. Can’t find her on the 1841 census, but she is on the 1851 census as a servant aged 39, working in the household of Francis Bernard, a Viscount MP and Deputy Lieutenant at 40 Lowndes Square, St Luke’s Chelsea, London.

In 1861 she is aged 49 working as a lace mender and living with her unmarried sister Ann Moore (aged 39, born Brixham, a lace mender), a married woman called Sarah A.P. Moore (lace mender, aged 33, born Devon ) and a servant Sarah A White. All at 61 Berners St Marylebone, London.

1871 she is a servant in the household of a widow called Mary Whisker and Mary Whitaker’s granddaughter Mary J. Whitaker at 1 Grove Place St John Hamstead, London.

In 1882 she is an inmate at the Aged Pilgrams Home, Islington and she died in 1899. What a long life to be in service!

Child 5) Benjamin George Moore b1816 Brixham Devon. Married Jane Adams 17 May 1836 at Christ Church, St Marylebone. Anna Moore (likely Benjamin’s sister the lace mender) was a witness.

Their children;
- Julia Lucy Moore b. 3 Jan 1838, Kensington, Middlesex (father listed as a tailor on her baptism at Holy Trinity, Brompton
- Maria Moore b. 1840 Wokingham, Berkshire
- Emily Moore b1843 Southwest Road Middlesex
- Thomas Moore b1845 Bell St Marylebone
- James Moore b 1847 Bell St Marylebone
- Jane Moore b1850 Aylesbury Buckingham shire

In 1851 the family are living in Aylesbury Buckinghamshire and Benjamin Moore is a journeyman tailor.
