Some thoughts, suggestions needed please

William Webster als Wilkinson named his first child Katherin and the second child Mary.

Going to be brave and make a couple of predictions! :)

1) As the groom was named William Webster als Wilkinson in the marriage to Mary Wigg, plus naming a child Mary (didn't everyone I hear you mutter), William and his wife Mary Wigg are my ancestors.

2) The mother of William Webster als Wilkinson will be a Katherin and a Webster.

If the William at London and the William at Sawbridgeworth are one and the same (please oh Lord make it easy for me) who was the person with the big mouth who informed the vicars in both locations that William was illegitimate? Probably at the time could be identified as the person with a black eye or two and teeth missing.

All joking aside it does make one think about how William's illegitimacy could follow him around, after all it's not as though St Gregory London was in the next door parish to Great St Mary Sawbridgeworth.

Did a bit of work on William Webster als Wilkinson and his wife Mary Wigg who married in 1634 on Ancestry, found nothing decisive but a few items of interest.

Having in mind that William named children Katherin, William, Mary George and Dorathy I noted the following as possibly some sort of clue.

William Webster son of George baptised 10 Apr 1610 at St Giles, Cripplegate,London.
William Webster son of Richard and Dorothy baptised 10 Sep 1617 at St Dunstan, Stepney, London.
I realise that neither are William Webster als Wilkinson having no indication of illegitimacy but might be clues, I can't seem to find a William whose baptism entry shows only a mother's name.

Mary Wigg daughter of George baptised 19 Feb 1614 at Furneux Pelham, Herts.
Mary Wigg daughter of Henry baptised 30 March 1617 at Furneux Pelham, Herts.
Furneux Pelham is none too far from Sawbridgeworth, Ware and Widford, on the map it lays to the north east of Bishops Stortford.

Have finished searches 1580 - 1620 for a William Webster als Wilkinson birth or baptism on FMP, Family Search, Ancestry, Free Reg and The Genealogist, none had a William Webster in London or Hertfordshire where the entry had only a mother's name. Free Reg and and the Genealogist had no William Websters at all in London or Herts in the period I searched.

I guess I'm going to have to call it a day for now, I'm all out of search options and ideas, if only the d****d marriage "licence from the faculties" had been saved/available I might have been in with a chance. :headbang:

Look on the bright side, Derek, as you have managed to go a lot further back on your WEBSTER/WILKINSON lines than a lot of researchers ever manage when looking for their ancestors. At least, that is what my husband always tells me whenever I bemoan the fact that I have got stuck on any of my earlier lines!!

Janet

Yes I should be grateful I know Janet but it's not easy to admit defeat is it, even if it's only a temporary defeat, perhaps I should try and kid myself it's just a tactical withdrawal. :)

I will revisit this every so often just in case a hitherto not transcribed parish is transcribed, as I do other brick walls. :D

Btw forgot to mention, in the London PRs on ancestry I could not find any children baptised of William Webster als Wilkinson and his wife Mary Wigg, I think that adds a little more weight to that couple being my ancestors.

Derek, have you ever looked into "The Genealogist" site? I noted in the
'Genealogyintime' Newsletter, mention of their having some Essex records newly listed.
Thinking of having a delve myself into The Genealogist as they do seem to have some 'different records to the other sub sites. Have dekko here:

Thanks for the heads up Wendy.

Yes I've been in and carried out some of the preliminary searches which can be done without subs. I think it would be quite a while ago since I did any Essex searches there though, will give it a bash sometime soon, might yield a clue or two.
