I can see stitching on the lower ones, so perhaps it's just the lighting.

Just curious, does anyone know what that is on his lapel in the right hand photo?

I think I have it sussed (I have been interrogating my mother).

He was employed by British Insulated Cables, therefore I think it says 'B.I.C'.

Well done you - I’ve been trying to track down the badge on the interwebby, but with no luck. Now we know what it is, the question is, what was he given it for.........

Very good BH. Like Ann I too had no luck searching for it. Maybe an award of some sort.

It could be a lapel badge issued to all employees. I have one, except that mine says GKN.

The usual factory worker lapel badge appears to incorporate a 'BI', I noticed yesterday browsing eBay collectables, as does the long service award - no 'C'. The picture has a Liverpool photographer's stamp.

It does look rather fancy for an ordinary staff badge, unless it was part of his uniform.

Quite by chance, I am now in contact with this young man's descendants, which I am delighted about.
