Having just found Caillebout as a valid original spelling for Calybute, I discovered his grandmother had the name Elizabeth Churlacare (1541- 1601) in Lancashire. Nowhere seems to yield even a vague semblance to the name! Ancestry flashed up a different name like Tallatare before covering the screen with the advice I should return to Ancestry Australia where I was more likely to find my relatives. (I HATE this message). Even Mr Google told me there was nothing and AskChatGPT wanted me to pay even before I searched. Any ideas on the originally intended surname? I thought something French like the grandson, Calybute Downing.

Just a thought...with some research into the name Calybute Downing, came across the 'Downing Baronesty'.
Geoffrey Downyng of Belchamp St Paul in Essex married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Wingfield of Dunham Magna Norfolk and had son Arthur Downying, married Susan daughter of Thomas Calybute of CASTLE ACRE in Norfolk and had son Calybute Downing. No dates are given until later on in the info.
CHURLACRE/CASTLEACRE?

Plausible, given the level of literacy and changes in the notation of speech sounds! I'll see if that produces any decent connections- terribly long time ago.

Widow Elizabeth BLUNDELL buried St Peter and Paul, Ormsick 1601, same year as the death of your Eliz. Churlacare.
Marriage of Eliz. Shurlacare also at St Peter and Paul Ormsick.

The closest I can come with on Lanc OPC is the name HOULCARR. I thought I had a hit with Elizabeth Houlcarr but she died an infant.

More Shurlacares than you can poke a stick at on Lancashire OPC. All spellings.,Shurlacares, Shurlacar, Shyrlaceres, Shirliker, Shorlacars, and on and on. But none beginning with CH.
Very popular St Peter and Paul Ormskirk.

Your Elizabeth Churlacare is named on an FS tree has the same marriage details as the Elizabeth Shurlacare who married in 1559 to Edward Blundell. I have no idea where the surname originated though. Probably Norse meanings. Carr is Norse for swamp. Other than that….

Saying "Churlacre" aloud makes me think that perhaps the usual spelling might end in -AKER. (Like Whittaker)?
And it might start with a J.

CHOLLAKER? JULLAKER? ... the options are endless ...

I don't envy you this search!

Creative suggestion- I'll write those down with the others!

Hmm... I don't like the idea of the family being swamp creatures!

Have you considered all the Shurlacare names in every form in Lancashire.,heaps of them but not a Churlacare in sight. I think the name is Shurlacare. Elizabeth is Shurlacre at her marriage in 1559. Born and died the same years as you have Elizabeth Churlacare. Also some research has……..Sherliker= from the lost place name Shurlacres, Halsall Lancs.
which is recorded as Shurwallacres in 1476. Old English for ‘clear+wells’ = well, spring, stream
