This is the place of service for Henry Turner (b1827 Twickenham transcribed as Swickerham)from the British Army Service Records on FMP - what does it say?
That was my first thought GrannyBarb but then I thought "would there have been British troops stationed in Australia around the mid to late 1800s?" Wouldn't completely rule it out though.
Australia. Convicts were still coming well into mid 1800's. Not so much to NSW but Western Australia among other places. Blown up there is a u after the A.
Thanks everyone - my thought was Australia but like Findem did not know if soldiers were in Aus in the 1840's.
I have now asked Mr Google and found the following
He was in the 65 Foot regiment - they went to Aus from Woolwich in 1846 (which fit nicely with his 19 year service) and returned in 1865 when he was discharged. It appears after landing in Sydney in October they went onto New Zealand in November.
From the link Mealymoo gave it says the 65 were in NSW from 1846 - 1849
Either way now I know why I cannot find him in Twickenham 1851 and 1861
