A Bonza Little Digger!
Not immensely important but intrigued me, I cannot find him after 1871 to see what else he may have been unless it was he in & out of work house. 1851 misnamed as Jones 11. He was born 1839 but ages vary in censuses. I thought maybe wharf roustabout but....??
Can a clearer pair of eyes work out his occupation please.

I cannot work it out either, it appears to be in a different hand from the other entries and it appears on the previous page against Harriet Armstrong (age 24)

:D it does now you mention it. He was said to be married but I've not found a marriage just a presumption in 1871.
 
It actually appears in one form or another against quite a few entries. In each case that I’ve found, it is written beside someone who is stated to be married, but hasn’t got their other half living with them. So, I reckon it says ‘M(arried) where W(ife) is absent’.
 
Ripper Ann, thank you, I concentrated on finding him in other years & didn't look about in 1861.
Been cleaning bathrooms etc, should have stayed on here & stayed pain free.

A child said to be born in 1862 may be the reason for wife's absence, not found birth with any surety--some trees have wife as Smith.
 
If it is your man in 1871 - St John Place, St Olave RG10/626/6/5 - occ ships smith wife Sarah (1840) and 2 children Sarah Ann 1862, Mary Ann 1868

GRO birth reg for Mary Ann gives mmn Smith - Sept qtr 1867 St Mary Magdalen Bermondsay 1d 73:)

That said, I couldn't find a birth reg for Sarah Ann with mmn Smith (but I had been on granny duty all day, so was weary!);)

Yes I believe that to be him.

1881 coincidentally has a Sarah Vaughan with a dtr "" for Sarah A.aged 19 George Vaughan b. Tobago 1836. Sarah gives Totham Essex as birth place-Essex different pen. I wonder if it's meant for Tottenham where she claimed to have been born in 1871.
Mary Ann not with but I didn't get to check further- popped in another Ambo run for himself & have just arrived home, now Son has gone back to pick him up as things checked out okay.

A Mary Ann Moulton married Mr Brien & things look good to be her. Deceased father James, witness Sarah Vaughan.

There is a Great Totham and a Little Totham in Essex. Tottenham has always been in Middlesex.......:confused:
 
Me Too Ann, I didn't find Mr Vaughan earlier or later that I remember, my afternoon became a bit of ablur with family happenings taking my attention. The above mentioned marriage made me sit up & take notice with the Vaughan name, the other witness was Edwin something which also looks a bit like Vaughan, but spelled differently. Bit sleepy now-way past my bedtime. Just waiting for m men to arrive so I can go to bed.

The age is way out at 51 though.
 
No sign of Mary Ann Moulton in 1881 but there is a Mary Ann Vaughan working as a domestic servant [b1867 Bermondsey} RG11/524/117/6

I have seen this before when a child goes by stepfather's name, then marries.

sounds very likely MM, I did I think see that one but had to leave searching & didn't note it down. I did see a Wright family as that name is in my family a few times. Thank you.
