Where was he born

Just a small question if I can.
Why would William have 2 sons William both living?. One William Spettigue and the other plain William,
Who is Frederick Spettigue bp 1817 father William Blakeley?

OK. I'm back. We had a massive storm.
Sorted now as you said earlier it was William Spottigue but it was Frederick.
But in Pigots Directory of 1840 Hereford Name Index a W. Blakely, Church Street, is the Registrar of BDM.
Directly underneath is William Blakley, Kington, surgeon.
They are the only two listed under the name of Blakeley.
Are they one and the same or two different people and related?

Above is Rev TB's career from the Cambridge alumni website. No mention of Tobago there I'm afraid....
Hi Grizel

thanks for that. I had found a bit about him but not as much as you. There is also a thesis that a student wrote about the son of TB but I cant find that now. Never mind I think we agreed that whilst there maybe a connection this is not the guy we are looking for?

Hello again.
Sorry if I made a typo. Frederick Spettigue was the third of the three sons and he became a farmer after marrying very well. William is the eldest brother who was born in Palermo and became a surgeon/GP in Kington and for a while in the IOM. The second son George Armstrong went to Oxford and was ordained. All three stayed in or around Kington.
Peter ,I had heard of the Blakely Rifles, & always thought it a litte large to call a rifle, I just googled to refresh.

Another query I had yesterday, if this is the first born son of your William & Anne, might he have been named for the Fathers of William & or Anne? Now seeing the name of the name of William's competitor in the gun business I wonder.....?
George Armstrong Blakeley
Christened: 02 Dec 1814
KINGTON,HEREFORD,ENGLAND
Pts: William Blakeley + Anne
Hi Wendy

George Armstrong Blakely is my partner's grandfather.
Best wishes

Hi

I think maybe I have so many responses I am getting confused over which ones I have responded to and which not! William had three sons. William, (surgeon/GP),George Armstrong (ordained) and Frederick Spettigue (farmer). Sorry if I have confused everyone. There is another GAB 1861-1923 the son of FSB and it is he that was my partners grandfather.

I missed a bit in your response. The William you refer to is the same. He was Registrar and surgeon in Kington.

Post #3 mentions a letter from Theo to his very dear friend in the Army about the state of William's health.
William, the son, married Charlotte Hatch daughter of Captain Hatch in St Georges Church in Dublin. I think I read in the London Times the marriage notice where it states that the late Captain Hatch was in the 70th Regiment (it's hard to read)
Could this be the 'dear friend' do you think? And could this be the connection rather than a connection to Ireland? If you can follow my drifto_O
Could the missing years on William be in the 70th Regiment??

Hello again Archie's Mum
I am sure you are right about them being friends for I can see only a few other ways in which they might have met. Hatch is also a very Irish name. As for being in the 70th for a period, I rather doubt. Although he drops out of view there are some letters requesting an appointment covering quite a long period. Also, it was the Archivist at the Regt museum who did the research and found his previous enlistments in the Fencibles. If there had been anything in between I am sure he would have found it.
A nice thought but I would need more convincing I think. Thanks for the effort though!

In 2015 you made several responses to an enquiry I made. At the time you may recall that I had a copy of a letter from 'Theo' his brother and I had wrongly assumed that he was the brother in Tobago. You were quite right in one of your responses. Theo was the man who became Bishop of Down and several other places and he turns out to be the eldest brother to William and at least one other brother in Tobago. The letter came from Theo in Ireland and not the brother in Tobago. So, it now appears that Robert of Monktown Castle is William's father and William's nephew (postumously) is Captain Alexander Blakely of Blakely Rifle fame. So I am sorry that your work was not recognized at the time because I made a rather rash assumption! Please accept my thanks and my apologies!

Hello Peter,
Thank you so much. I'm very happy that I was able to help in some small part.
I love this lark. I get it right on occasions. Thank you for the thank you. Two words that make it all worthwhile.
Also. There was nothing to apologise for. :)
