Workhouse Records

Drat! 'sick asylum' was my first thought but I didn't think they would call it such a thing, having a work house- probably with hospital. Reads fair tho' if it was for a contagious illness. ;)

I think widow is written over married. The ink is much stronger.
Looking at the ink used, I also notice that the address has also been changed - from number 7 to 24 Grenade Street. It is also different handwriting for Edward's occupation and Elizabeth's age in the correct column.

I wonder who originally completed the form. If Elizabeth was unable to read and write, it might well have been someone who did not understand the form. I initially thought of her son, Edward, but would his handwriting have been as neat at the age of 15?
She claims 5 live births, 2 deaths. So the 3 children in Board schools she has not included, perhaps. The census is 'signed' Mrs Joiner - Elizabeth made her mark when she married.
If it was a neighbour, then they may have just asked her if she had had any children who had died and was not aware of the 3 children in Board Schools so made the assumption that she had 5 children. Also, by having the name "Mrs Joiner" also indicates that "Mr Joiner" was not there, otherwise it would be his name that was written.

I rest my case... :sceptical:

Just William Henry to try and find now;)
The 1911 census has William JOINER in the Stifford Children's Home aged 5, and so giving him a birth years of 1906. However, William Henry's birth was registered in Stepney in the December quarter of 1905. This would fit.

Moving on...

There is a death registration of a William H JOINER in the March quarter of 1964 (Southend, 4a/979) aged 58. This would also fit. :)

And the jury is in.....it’s him in 1910.
Yes I think it is, now I am home from the highlight of the week - not (the food shop!). I will see if I can locate a burial.

That's him, Matilda was also there. Alfred was at the Highwood School Brentwood.

Yes that does look like him, Matilda, Alfred and Robert also all died in Southend, so it looks like the family stayed together and moved to Southend after they married.
Elizabeth died in Romford, where Edward junior and family lived and died.

Thanks everyone, I think this ties up the family nicely {-(^^)-}
