Lipmans of Aldgate

Hello,

The Lipmans were a German-Jewish family, and the name is my mother's maiden name. My grandad's grandad converted to Christianity and married an Englishwoman in 1873. His grandad was Lewis Lipman, born 1800. This is where the trail goes cold, other than some questionable only genealogies. Lewis came from Aldgate.

Thanks,

Adam

Is this him in 1851?

Having looked in Jewish records, the hebrew for Lewis seems to be Yehuda Leib but the alternatives for Mary are many and varied.

I know you're in the wrong county but searching for records of the Great Synagogue which was in Aldgate, and mostly for people from Germany and Eastern Europe gives
Description: birth and marriage registers, ketubot and burial
Date: 1770-1973
Held by: London Metropolitan Archives: City of London

There might be more info on a record

There is this death which might have been mistranscribed with the first name, but otherwise looks like him?

I took a peek at Scotland's People and came up blank. Searching both Lipman and Libman. Also the NLS digital collection of Glasgow directories from the 1840's and 50's. There I only say a Moss Lipman, quill dresser.

Hmm. He must have been born in the British Isles, as Lewis declares he is not an alien nor the son of an alien. However, I won't be able to access baptism records for the family as they are Jewish.

Moss/ Moses Lipman b London 1809 and who is in Glasgow in 1841 and 1851 (freecen), died in Scotland in 1864. His death certificate is available on Scotland's people and may possibly name his father and mother.

A possible older brother Henry Lipman was also in Glasgow in 1841

have looked at my record books for The Great Synagogue, Hambro and New Synagogue but cannot find anything at all, but he may have been recorded in a lesser known synagogue,
there are a number of trees on Ancestry but although they have some dates (not all the same!!) apart from census they have no sources, but it might be worth contacting some as they may have the records

A bit of colour -although I can only see a snippet as I don't have a sub, on 18-20th Feb 1848, Lewis Lipman of Field Place, Houndsditch (Houndsditch is in the address in the freedom of the city, it's an area of St Botolph's). He's a beer shop and coffee house keeper, was fined for selling spirits. There may be more...

Joseph Lipman son of Lewis of Phils Buildings married Julia Lipman dau of Levy Lipman in the Novo Synogogue 1849
John Lipman son of Lewis married Rose dau of Michael Lipman 1857 in the same place
So this generation at least used the Novo
