Hello everyone, I've been sidetracked for a while.

I have this picture of my grandfather (I'm assuming) during WW1. But today, whilst looking at the stripes on his uniform, I'm confused. o_O He is Capt. D L Jones, he is also a master mariner, but in this picture the top stripe that indicates a captain is the wrong way. Is this just because the picture has been reversed or is it a "fake" uniform?? I have never been able to find him in any database for any country. I should think it would be England or Canada. The hat has the double oak leaves. Help me..........:headbang:

Hello Mrs Huma, welcome back.
I have no idea how a captains stripes should be , however if the photo was reversed then the coat closing would be back the other way. It's still left over right.
If you mean the loop then shouldn't the left arm loop be mirror of the right? Both of his go the same way!

Quite possible that the uniform is from a photographic studio Wendy, to allay fears of people making false claims as to their rank or profession.

Go for it toots, today you would have had reason after my merry?-go-round with a particular fee paying site recently rejoined. Am ready to toss it all in the air & "say you win you...!"
but am not about to be defeated by a bunch of moneygrabbing hard hearted what'sits!
 
I can't thank everyone enough to help out with this mystery. I found "the executive curl, or alternatively the "Elliot's Eye", is the name given to the ring above a naval officer's gold lace or braid insignia". It definitely shows the ring at the top, going under from the right and over coming down on the left. The closing of the uniform is double breasted with the six (6) buttons. Somewhere I read about the double oak leaves on the hat. I have found him on three (3) different passenger ship lists, all with Capt. or retired Capt. Even one from 1917 departing from London arriving in Montreal with a country of permanent residence intended as Canada. Was he ever in WW1 or did he just make a pretense of going...............??? Wendy, there are several men by name of David Llewellyn Jones listed about same b.date. can you say please where he was born? was he married & where did he die?
Many men known only as David no 2nd name mentioned. One David LLewellyn Jones died in 1918 at war.
I've seen medal cards for two Davids, one b.1869 one b. 1870. Both possibly same man.

If you have Ancestry sub, have you seen:_
UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927 ?

David Llewellyn Jones age 26 born about 1871 London England, father David mother Eliza, occupation surveyors assistant.
Married Nanaimo BC to Rose Elizabeth Sage 1897.

I've seen several family trees-at least one has same photo as Wendy. Stating presence in 3 Canadian census. Have only found him with family in 1901- a steveadore. Tried various names from family but no luck.

There is an incoming to Liverpool for a David Llewellyn Jones, Master Mariner 1925 from Montreal,
Your latest just came through via email Sue. Same Lady I'm following in trees.

They give his death as
11 Nov 1937 • Islington, London, England
will see if he has Probate there, I did look earlier but not seen.

David Llewellyn Jones of 43 Campden Hill Court, Kensington died 4 Feb 1938 probate to widow Elizabeth Jones/ seems wrong chap. maybe he didn't leave a will .

edit:- cannot find a death in 1937 to match him either.

On list of owners and tenants of this property.
1910-1913
Capt. David Llewellyn Jones, master mariner, stevedore and clerk with the Dominion Marine and Fisheries Dept and Rosa Elizabeth. In 1914 they lived at 740 Mary Street Victoria West. David returned to England in the 1920's, was hit by a carriage and disabled.
I think the reference of the 'Captain' title was his service as a ship captain in the merchant navy or more likely, fishing fleet.
 
He could have been in the service transporting goods and people during the war . My great uncle was a Capt in the Australian Merchant Navy and whose ship was torpedoed by the Japanese on 29th June 1944

Had a look on Canada Archives for Merchant Navy records. Before WW2 it is impossible as you must have the name of the ship he served on! So that's that. I still think he was on fishing ships as he worked for the Fisheries Dept.
