Photo - Give Me A Clue!

If my husband wasn't working today I'd be inclined to pop down to the Maritime Museum in Liverpool. I have a feeling the answer may be found there, or a suggestion of what the occasion might have been, because like everyone else I now feel that the photo has ties with the sea.

Manchester and Middlesborough both have big ties with the sea and its associated industries. Manchester is inland, but has the ship canal.

Some time back a question was asked about a ring or cap badge which featured a 'funny face or skull"- or so it appeared. It turned out to be a sailing club insignia for someone somewhere. Mind is tuning to sleep.
Chimp may remember. It was bought to mind by. some of the toggles on the boy's scarves

I think a Duke of some where or similar.

Oh one last thing- Boy's Brigade? They were about abit back then yes?
Their large badge on this page resembles tat on the young lad in the 'beret' cap.

Also I don't believe it is a scarf. I think it is a collar and the tie is separate. If you check the photo there is no fold of a scarf just a sharp edge. Too sharp to be a folded scarf. I think the collar is attached to a pop over jacket or shirt. The tie seems to be a smaller longer piece.

WOW! Such progress! Thank you guys.
I shall send the photo to the Liverpool museums address ... and perhaps there IS a link there. (I've not done much on this family, them being the siblings of my gt gt uncle's wife ... but after the mother's death in 1900 they were in LIVERPOOL in 1901)

Gotta go - beds to make (grandchildren arriving for Easter ... so I may not get another chance to visit here until late next week :()

Good luck with the museum.

Best Easter gift ever. Have a great time with the grandkids - all other things (even those genealogical) can wait.

Check out the middle illustration. I thought the "scarf" worn by the photo boys was very similar to the navy uniforms myself.

And the boy in the middle is in "Whites", I think it would be safe to assume a naval theme but the where, who and why, short of extreme luck (I almost said miracle) Looks lok remaining a mystery but then.......

Any thing of help here? tie pin, button holes pocket?
Does Scotland creep into the equation?

Well, the wonderful archivist at Liverpool's Maritime Museum has ruled out some of my speculations:
"I cannot see any maritime related clues (neither the uniforms nor the flags), so it's definitely not a Sea Scout group. It may be a case that these uniforms were made as a 'one off' to celebrate some historical occasion."
She suggests that I send it to the Liverpool Record Office, so that's what I'm now doing.

The Quest continues (slowly & painfully - pesky grandkids, they brought their bugs with them & now I've got "a touch of pleurisy" ... Good Grief!! I've got ancestors who died of that! :nailbiting:  But what do doctors know? ;))

Jane

Brilliant response from Liverpool and I must say the idea of the 'costumes' being a one off makes sense......but one off for what. I look forward to the next idea

Not so brilliant about your "touch of pleurisy" - that'll learn you (as my granny used to say) to play with your grandchildren ;) Seriously, hope you are feeling better soon {-(^^)-}

I wonder if the boy in the net cape is supposed to represent the ocean.
I did think 'The Sailors Hornpipe'. The fact that it is the national dance of England and that they are showing the Union Jack. The other flag could be the school flag.
PS get well soon. I've never had it but I believe it can be quite nasty.
Kids
