Bowles Family - County Tipperary

Note: I could not find County Tipperary listed under the Munster Province.

My great great grandmother was Jane Bowles who married Joseph Winnett 13 Sep 1849 at Silvermines, Tipperary, Ireland. Joseph came from Killaloe in County Clare whereas Jane was born in Silvermines, County Tipperary. Jane and Joseph emigrated to Australia with their three children, Richard, Ellen and Elizabeth aboard the Horizon arriving in Melbourne on 9 Dec 1857. Two of Jane’s sisters travelled on the same ship: her married sister, Mrs Sarah Hardy, with her husband William and son Robert (by her first marriage) and her unmarried sister Mary Ann Bowles. Another sister, Mrs Miles also emigrated to Australia.

I am lucky to have a record of the family written by my grandfather Joe Pederick in 1956: it was written for his grandchildren and typed by my mother in quadruplicate. Joe explains that the explanation for the Winnett’s emigration is a curious one. “Grandma Winnett had a sister who was widowed very early in life. She later married her deceased husband’s brother. In so doing she violated a law of the church and created such a scandal that life became intolerable for them and they migrated to Australia. Apparently they liked the new country and soon she persuaded her three sisters, Mrs Miles, Mrs. Winnett and Miss Bowles to come out too.” As already detailed above, in fact all sisters, except Mrs Miles, travelled to Australia together on the Horizon.

I have a few issues that I am hoping someone on Top Dog may be able to help me with. On the death record for the son, Robert Hardy, his father’s name is given as Samuel Hardy, so I assumed that Sarah’s first husband was named Samuel. That is until today when someone on Ancestry kindly pointed out a marriage between a Sarah Bowles and Robert Hardy on 13 May 1845 at Ballynaclogh, Tipperary, Ireland. I have not found a death for Robert (or Samuel) but presumably he died about 1855 and Sarah subsequently married his brother, William, about 1856, before they came to Australia in 1857. I have not found the baptisms for any of the Hardy brothers and don’t know who their parents were. And finally I have not found with any certainty when Elizabeth, the fourth Bowles daughter, and her husband Edward Miles arrived in Australia. William Bowles appears to have arrived in Australia in 1820 aboard Alfred, and James in 1853 aboard Hanover. So perhaps it was the brothers who encouraged the sisters to come to Australia.

The parents of the Bowles siblings were James Bowles and Elizabeth Barber and in all I have found six of them: William, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Sarah, James and Jane all born in County Tipperary, and most at Silvermines, in the 1820s. Mind I have not found a single baptism and they appear to be Protestant.

Any suggestions? Any help will be much appreciated. I think I hate dealing with Irish records as I never seem to get very far with them.

Cheers,

Esther

Hi Esther, if they were Presbyterian there are no records available online, non-conformist churches worldwide are very unhelpful today as they were when the Mormon church did their microfilming year ago - soooo frustrating for us that have Presbyterian rellies and now they are huge brickwalls, I know just how you feel.

Just a quick look and I'm assuming they emigrated to Victoria, finds an Edward Myles 23 and Eliza Myles 22 arriving on the 'Sea' in 1851 to Victoria. I have checked NSW and Queensland to no avail but I didn't have anything more than a peek!

I would expect that Edward and Elizabeth landed in Victoria as that is where the rest landed, except William who, arrived much earlier, 1840, in NSW. I'd expect that those that came in 1857 ended up 'on Clunes' for a few years and may have ended up in the Goulburn Valley: that is what Joseph and Jane Winnett did and Mary Ann Bowles also died at Kyabram.

Had a peek at 'The Cornishmen of Clunes' and spotted some 'Vales' on the surname list. Must check to see if any belong to me. The site made for some interesting reading.

Certainly was rather interesting, quite a distraction really, had me checking for my husband's Cornishmen! Luckily there were no Veales, but there were some Grenfells and Harveys!

My Grandmother was Constance Harley Knight (Mayberry) her father was Walter Winnett Maybery, his father was Alexander Mayberry married to Elizabeth Winnett who I believe was the daughter of Joseph and Jane. Hi possible cousin. :)
Hi EmmaK,
We are definitely related: Elizabeth Winnett is an older sister of my great grandmother, Jane Barber Winnett. Was Walter Mayberry b 1887 on Clunes? I ask because I have a different middle name and will have to check his details in my Winnett references? Did he marry Marion White in 1913?

Just love finding cousins!

By the way EmmaK I see you are a new member, who has only joined today. So let me welcome you to Top Dog. Why don't you tell us all about your research interests on 'New to our Forum?' They are a really great group here albeit somewhat crazy at times but definitely friendly and helpful always.

Oh I see what I have done, along with some others, I got Frederick and Walter Mayberry confused. I think I have it sorted now. Walter married Constance Hartley/Harley McCartney; Frederick married Marion White.

Thanks Esther.I remember now!You have probably seen this from Margaret Ellen Winnett "Whilst in Nenagh, County Tipperary today we visited St Mary's Church of Ireland where Joseph Winnett of Killaloe, County Clare married Jane Bowles of Silvermines, County Tipperary" on Facebook.Margaret said she had a copy of the marriage certificate but so far she has been too busy to forward it.Up until now Silvermines has always been mentioned as Joseph and Janes wedding location.Just wondering if you have any info on this?

I am in the same boat as you in understanding that they were married at Silvermines and so was hoping Margaret would post her copy of the marriage certificate. Unfortunately the FamilySearch index entry for their marriage does not list the marriage place: the citation I have is as follows:
"Ireland Marriages, 1619-1898," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGX7-WV3 : accessed 14 March 2016), Joseph Winnett and Jane Bowles, 13 Sep 1849; citing Civil Records, , Misc, Ireland, reference 2PL74X2; FHL microfilm 101,309

For the event place it simply states: Civil records, Misc, Ireland. Unless someone on Top Dog knows how to check the details out further I am at a loss to determine more.

Postscript to previous post:
I noticed I had a note in my entry for their marriage and just went and checked David Turvey's book on the Winnetts: apparently their son James Joseph Winnett (your gt grandfather Don) wrote an In Memoriam after Joseph's death which states that "He was married on the 12th of September 1849 - in Silvermines Church by the Rev. Andrew Armstrong Jones.
