Frampton, Dorset - Parish registers

I am now tackling pre-1813 PRs

This is from the Commonwealth era and is a register of births rather than baptisms




What I read is "John the Sonne of John Bartlett ~ Elme(?) was Borne the 8th Day of March [1655]"

Unusually it doesn't seem to name the mother, at least I don't think that is the purpose of the blotches/squiggles after the father's name (the usual pattern is e.g. "John and Mary Jones" rather than "John Jones and Mary Jones")

I wondered if it was a placename or a title, but I am failing to make sense of it

I see both of those names, Soulis then Thomas Souslis

Good find AM - when I first looked at the name I thought it might say Annstis, as I've come across Anstis before (thought they may have slipped in an extra n) but it is obviously another form of the name

I'd been wavering between Annstis and Aunstis, Annstie and Aunstie. I like Annstis the best, but don't really believe that it is two 'n's as I see 'un', so I will go with Aunstis

AM I don't believe that Elme is the mother's name (for reasons stated before), but I think it is an abode (I think it says 'at Elme', possibly a person of some status (?) no-one else gets an abode mentioned)

I asked Mr Google about Elme as a place and one possible given is Tollard Whelme. Elme is also a surname too (links to Anc PR's for Dorset).
By co-incidence there is also a link to a will of Ralph Anstie 1/6/1609 (on Dorset OPC) - which could explain the problematic name.

what I have for this is

Luce the Daughter of Josshah and Jone Varnes
~~ was borne the 19th Day of Aprill [1658]

but would like some backup ... [edit] Ancestry has the daughter as Cars and the father as Jossiah

I would agree with you on Luce, but there is a dot over the 'a' in Joss?ah, so the ? could be an i mixed in with the f/ss.
