My 3x Gr Grandmother, Elizabeth Wilshire who married William King

OK, you superstars! A new challenge for you, since you were so successful with resolving some of my other family mysteries, here's a new one!

My 3x great grandmother was called Elizabeth Wilshire, possibly Wiltshire, but I really haven't been able to find out much about her. Maybe you can help! I know she was born in about 1797, in Pinner, Middlesex. I have no record of her birth or baptism, or who here parents were. I believe she married William King (1784-1861) son of Thomas King (1748-1824) and Sarah Hall (1758-1828).

There is lots written about the King family who were a family of very successful merchants. William King and Elizabeth Wilshire were married in about 1820, but I can find no marriage record anywhere. They had 6 children, 3 boys and then 3 girls. I have seen pictures of her and the 3 boys and a cousin has a beautiful oil painting of the 3 daughters called the "3 graces". I found William and Elizabeth King in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census records and I have their death records in the National Wills records. I do not have their death certificates as finding them isn't easy though I believe his is probably Q2 1861, Pancras, London, Vol 1b, Page 75. I will apply for it. But I still can't find the death record for her!.....

Anyway, if any of you have any ideas about how to find out more about her, I would be very grateful!!....Best to you all! George in Vero Beach, Florida!!....Cheers!

Elusive isn't she.? Nearest I've come is 35 miles away in Guildford. Not herself unless they had reason to be in Guildford.

Elizabeth Willsher
Baptism Date: 19 Apr 1799
Baptism Place: Guildford, Holy Trinity, Surrey,
Father: William Smith
Reference Number: GUHT/1/3-5

Thanks so much for trying, Wendy....its just that the 1851 and 1861 census records say that she was born in Pinnor (1851) and Pinner (1861), Middx.....so I doubt whether she was from Guildford......I was thinking of trying to get in touch with the librarian at Pinner library.....I must admit, I have never been there!.....best, George

Libraries are wonderful George & so very helpful I have found. However, a person on a census will give the birthplace they believe they remember- if they even moved there as a child or infant.

Where did you find William & Elizabeth in 1841 George?
I ask because here Class: HO107; Piece: 1069; Book: 2; Civil Parish: Wandsworth Wimbledon; County: Surrey; Enumeration District: 5; Folio: 7; Page: 7;
Name: Elizabeth King
Age: 11
Estimated birth year: abt 1830
Gender: Female
Where born: Surrey, England
Civil Parish: Wandsworth Wimbledon
Hundred: Brixton (Western Division)

William King 55 Merchant- Not in County -
Elizabeth King 45 Not in County
Sarah King 13 b. in county
Elizabeth King 11 b. in County
Isabella King 8 b. in county
Mary Smith 25- Governess Not in County
Jane Raymond 25 if.s. Not in County
Mary Sewell 25-F.S. Not in County

This may mean nothing other than they were born in the next street which was a different County ie London v. Middlesex.
Is my desperation showing yet?

Thanks for your efforts, Wendy! Yes, that is the record in the 1841 census....living on West Hill.....I know because their next door neighbours , the Ruckers, feature in various wills etc. The 3 girls were with them but the boys probably at school or university....so I still believe that Pinner is the place! I may ring the library there tomorrow!.....
Best, George

Ancestry have the registers for Saint John the Baptist, Pinner - I had a look through them rather than the transcriptions 1790 - 1800, no Elizabeth or any other Wil[t]shire baptism:(.

no Elizabeth or any other Wil[t]shire baptism:(.
Perhaps I was being too hasty.

Originally I discounted this surname, this is an entry for 1799

But in October 1799 another family with the same name appear bap. a daughter

These two couples continue to bap children and this one in 1805 made me wonder if the surname is Wilshir

Having tried the papers, I found the following -
Police Gazette 19th February 1773
STOLEN, on Tuesday Night, the 15th Instant, out of the Stables of Daniel Wilshin, of Headstone, near Pinner, in Middlesex, a Black Mare, fifteen Hands high, a small Star in her Forehead, a Speck in the near Eye, a switch Tail, some Hair of which is rubbed off, full aged, and has been hurt in her Bearing, by having a Foal. Whoever will give Information where the said Mare may be found to Daniel Wilshin, aforesaid, shall receive Two Guineas Reward; or if offered to be disposed of, stop Her and the Party, and give Notice to Sir John Fielding, and you shall receive the same Reward from the Owner.

There are quite a few mentions of various Wilshins from Pinner in the papers, but nothing that would help with Elizabeth.

On Ancestry, I have found a baptism of an Elizabeth Wilshin on November 5th 1794 at St Leonard's Heston, daughter of John and Sophia. Heston is about 10 miles from Pinner.
