Heading off to bed, but was the name Chinese or Anglo?? It is hard to tell in Jamaica, what with all the mixes. George Yapp that I worked with was pretty dark, but had blue eyes and he was part Chinese?? But his children were lighter and looked a bit Asian.

I suppose the name came out from England seeing as more blacks have it than whites. (yes, I know that sounds weird, lol. Would take too long to explain it).

Finally received the birth certificates.

Re.-

The birth certificate says:-

Born: 24th October 1895
Name: Annie
Sex: Girl
Name of Father: -----------
Name of Mother: Margaret Yapp
Informant: Margaret Yapp, Mother, Church Street, Bishop's Castle.

So this is Annie, my great aunt.
Who was 'Preston' or did Margaret just make up a name when she went to have her christened. Or is 'Preston' where she started to say 'Pressdee' and stopped herself and changed it.

Who was the Annie Pressdee in the institution, born 11th January 1896

Have also sent for a birth cert for the Frances L Pressdee born in the Clun district in 1916. I know Annie had a child (which sex I don't know) this Frances has a mother with name Pressdee.

If this isn't Annie's child it won't matter. Frances went on to marry a Thomas McCarley in 1937. I have heard of Frances coming to stay with my grandfather and his family for a while. Until, that is, my grandfather found out she had left her husband. He then told her it was about time she found a place of her own or go back.

Got this birth certificate too, The certificate says:-

Born: 6th February 1916
Name: Frances Lilian
Sex: Girl
Name of Father: -----------
Name of Mother: Mary Pressdee
Informant: Mary Pressdee, Mother, Coppice Cottage, Clunbury

The only Mary Pressdee around at the time was Annie's sister born 1894.

I know that Frances was a relation to my grandfather (Annie and Mary's brother) so was Frances the child of my great aunt Mary?

Well it certainly looks like she was, all the evidence points to it. I take it Mary was of child bearing age when Frances was born? Or could it be some subterfuge by the sisters?

Mary was born c.1894 so she would have been 22, if in fact this is her child.

Maybe some-one was remembering a Baptismal date, or another birthdate mentioned in the past.
Rather like-[I've seen] Margaret, Mary & Martha are interchangeable names when the mood hits.

I have found on a distant cousins family tree, on Ancestry, that she already has all this information. I used to subscribe to her tree.

She has Annie's birth as 26th October, so have sent a correction, telling her it was the 24th. Also she has Frances as Mary's daughter. She has no source for it though. Neither of us know what became of Mary.

The last known sighting of Mary was in 1911. Mary Ann Pressdee, b. 1894 in Bishop's Castle aged 17 years. She was a domestic servant for the Greenway family in Norton, Nr. Presteigne, Radnorshire. (so she's added Ann to her name)

As an aside, I have to drive through Norton every day travelling to and from work.

Strange that she isn't shown as an Lunatic on the 1911 census. Makes me wonder if the story is true, that they put her in the institution because she was pregnant. But why !!!, her mother did it 3 times prior to her marriage.

1911 also has the numerals 270 written in red above Bishop's Castle in the birth place column. 270 is shown to be "270 Shropshire". but as you say-no 'Lunatic'' or similar.
I wonder if these marriages are useful?
