Handwriting translation needed, please

I'm not too sure that the first letter of the first name could be L it doesn't look like his other Ls, so I'm wondering if it's H.

I agree with Jan that the last name begins with S but I'm wondering if it could be Sena.

I should mention that I've never considered my self as being competent deciphering handwriting.

I've been working on the theory of H_ (de) la S_, also H_ (de) la L_
I've considered Hen_, Herm_, Hero_
I've tried Serra, Sena, Sera, Lerra, Lena, Lera

--- if only he was someone really famous ... Google doesn't really help if you have no idea what the name is, but I have tried all sorts of combinations

All I can tell you is that he was French (unfortunately, where in France he was born I have no idea), b c1837, a writer (what kind of books/articles, I have no idea), he was Catholic

I tried looking for deaths in Hackney between 1901 and 1911, but there are a lot ... and not really having an idea of the name (either first or last) ... and he could have decided to return to France, or move elsewhere in the UK/world:confused:

I tried looking for him in other censuses ... but ditto the above

Think I am stuck :(
 
Henri M la Serra can be found in Kensington on the 1891 census
RG12/20/65/2 - professor of Languages

Henry la Serra can be found on the 1861 census in Birmingham
RG09/2133/10/13 - professor of French Language

On both just France as pob.

Anc. also has these (I do not have a world sub to see more)

(having dreaded the loss of 'old search' - I must admit to being able to find more now by just putting the name into 'search all records' and then use the filters - long may it continue;))
 
I have just tried FS for a birth (Paris) and got the following

Name: Henri Serre
Event Type: Baptism
Event Date: 17 Jun 1837

Gender: Male
Father's Name: Etienne Serre
Mother's Name: Laurence Briard

Oh and I tried Mr Google and got hits for Henry Mancini (well it made me smile!!:D)

while I am struggling to locate my Institution of interest in 1891, I have discovered a lovely map drawn by the enumerator, which explains so much better than words the area he is covering -- if only they all did it
(I often have great trouble understanding the enumeration areas, especially in areas I don't know -- as is the case here, though I am constantly learning -- I shall just have to keep at it)

well, it's not what I was looking for but if you want to see it you need to go to Hackney (borough); Hackney (civil parish); Enumeration district 10

or it's the page before RG12/193/71/1

unfortunately your link went to "This does not exist" but I found a way around it [the National Archives webarchive here -- but you can't search in the search box or you will be on "This does not exist" again -- for a while I felt like I was existing in one of those circles of hell which will never let you complete a task] - so now I should be able to find what I want in the other censuses too -- I had meant to ask if something like this existed

At least I now know I had the wrong parish -- thought it was St John or St James, turns out to be Christ Church :rolleyes:

I have no idea what the enumerator intended to write, but I am fairly sure we have identified the man, Henri la Serre. Hopefully if I manage to read John Henry Newman's Letters and Diaries, I will be able to confirm that:)
 
I'm ridiculously tired so apologies if this is a sloppy message -- i think some of you know the place I am looking at and will be able to find it

I'm in 1881 now; I am trying to decipher Emma's name

I am fairly certain that the second bracketed part (the bit in the same line as Fanny Kirkby) is SCRIVENER rather than whatever Ancestry have, the other bit isn't Casanova -- though that would make me happy -- Ancestry have Casasnajor and I don't blame them o_O

she is from Lyme Regis, Dorset if anyone can find her, I couldn't immediately identify a death either :confused:

I'm going to sleep now, I'll probably be able to do this in the morning :)
