Just saw Sue's post... that age makes more sense for a wife. I can tell you that none of those children have the same name as other Mary Ann ( Polly's) do.

Samuel's mother was Sarah (SPINLEY, if I've got the right certificate. Father is a Fishmonger, so I'm optimistic):

Yes I think so, but Hannah rather than Sarah. I think baptised as Spendley and married to William in Filey. I expect you have seen that family in 1851. In 1841 I think the children may be with an older sister Elizabeth.

Have you noticed the Samuel Mason, mechanic, married to Jane (Williamson) in Leeds in 1861?.....

Like everyone else I can't find Sam and the American children in the USA.

Now there is a Yorkshire baptism for a son , William, on Nov.9 1865 in Leeds for them with a notation that it was revised with the church but I can't read it all.
 
One Ancestry tree is saying this is the Samuel you're looking for.

UK, Lunacy Patients Admission Registers, 1846-1912
Name Samuel Mason Gender Male Admission Date 29 Apr 1865 Institution W. York Intitution Place West Yorkshire, England Death Date 16 Apr 1866 Death Place West Yorkshire, England.

William was buried in Beckett Street Cemetery, Leeds on 16 Dec 1866.

Is this a case of "Chinese Whispers"?
Or "Daddy likes to make up stories"?

I admit that I haven't done any research on Sam MASON, apart from his Birth Certificate. (He's the "husband of 1st cousin 3x removed") But that's going to change!

(But if anyone ever comes across an Atlantic crossing for father Sam with sons William, Thomas & John ... please let me know!)

Grizel, please can you point me to where you found the Leeds marriage?

I seem to be stuck on the wrong side of the Pennines (Bury, Lancs) - there's a Sam & Jane MASON there ... but they're still there in 1881, by which time my Sam had emigrated to Oz.

MASON; June 10th 1911 at the residence of his son, George Mason. Samuel Mason Late of Liverpool NSW dearly loved father of William, Thomas, John and George Mason aged 80 years after a long illness.

Good morning all. Reading all the night shift work now - and fear I have sent you on a bit of a wild goose chase...

I could see William the fishmonger, wife Hannah and family inc a Samuel all in Leeds in 1851 census.
I could then see a Samuel of the correct age with wife Jane in 1861 census in Leeds. (Prob Jane nee Williamson , marriage in 1860.)
Poss Mason /Williamson children b Leeds- Mary Elizabeth 1861, Hannah 1863, William 1865, Letitia 1868
Could not see any of above in 1871, wondered if Samuel had run away across the pond maybe with Polly....
But if that Samuel died in an asylum in 1866 then he could not be yours.
Hope that makes sense!

Jane.. It was just a thought I had as the youngest was born in
Yorkshire and it makes me wonder if someone only hear York and assumed New York! Thought I would take a look and see what I could find!
 
Did you notice that the manifest of the John Elder has the Mason's....Of What Nation?........Lyttleton.......Lyttleton is in New Zealand!

Or, as the ship was heading toward Sydney, via Adelaide and Melbourne could they have been heading to New Zealand as that's the way the ship was going. There are quite a few passengers with Lyttleton against their names.
 
Hi,

From the Beckett Cemetery, Hannah (Spendley) Mason's burial record gives an address of 57 Kirkgate.

In the same cemetery, there is a burial record for Samuel Mason, d. 7 Oct. 1873, age 2-3/4, address 57 Kirkgate, son of Sam Mason.

I can't find a birth record for this Samuel which should be about Jan. 1871.

Could this be the 4th unknown child. And if Thomas' birth year of 1871 is correct, it could be his twin.

There are no 2-yr old Samuel Mason deaths registered in 1873. There's only one Leeds death - a 77-yr old.
