If I have the right Sam he was baptised 1837 at St Peters Leeds to William and Hannah. So C of E I guess.
Do you have details of William and Hannah already? Or I can post what have found. Also this Samuel's birth is after start of civil registration.

Have you noticed the Samuel Mason, mechanic, married to Jane (Williamson) in Leeds in 1861?.....
Like everyone else I can't find Sam and the American children in the USA.
Now there is a Yorkshire baptism for a son , William, on Nov.9 1865 in Leeds for them

Yes I think so, but Hannah rather than Sarah. I think baptised as Spendley and married to William in Filey. I expect you have seen that family in 1851. In 1841 I think the children may be with an older sister Elizabeth.

Or, as the ship was heading toward Sydney, via Adelaide and Melbourne could they have been heading to New Zealand as that's the way the ship was going. There are quite a few passengers with Lyttleton against their names.Did you notice that the manifest of the John Elder has the Mason's....Of What Nation?........Lyttleton.......Lyttleton is in New Zealand!
