Thanks for all this information! As the only foreign branch on my tree it is interesting to investigate. I also had problems with my 3x great-grandmother, Rosetta Franks. She married Morris Lipman in 1844. Not sure where, and no idea as to her parents.
Rosetta Franks married Morris Lipman December qtr 1844 London City Volume 2 page 195 I do not see the entry on either FMP or Ancestry, so it could be you will need to buy the marriage cert from the GRO to find out who her father was.
Hi Adam The National Archives have a couple of wills which may relate to your family in Aldgate and may possibly even mention Lewis's father. Marcus Lipman 13 Nov 1789 ref PROB 11/1185/96 Moses Lipman 12 Nov 1800 ref PROB 11/1350/71 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_q=Lipman&_p=1800&Refine+dates=Refine
Holy cow!!!! I didn't realize this thread was there when I answered on the other one!!! Amazing research, folks....which clarifies and adds to a couple of my suppositions on the origin of the name...I am sure that it was more likely Lipschitz or similar! Also on the occupations. Milliners, tailors, shoe repair, etc. Now I wonder if my London Lipman's weren't distantly related cuz I couldn't find any on the LDS site that fit in Scotland birth wise. WOW again!!
I had a look in the record books and although the marriage is there Rosetta doesn't have a fathers name although address given was 2 Love Court and there is an Esther Franks at 1 Love court with a father Benjamin Franks. Morris's father is down as Eliezer in 1810 a Benjamin Franks married a Pricilla Abrahams a possible
That's the thing with the 1841 census - relationships are not shown. If nephews or nieces - or even complete strangers/servants who happen to have the same surname - are in the house at the time, it just throws another spanner in the works...
Looking on synogoguescribes.com at others called Eliezer, a number of them, when you look at their hebrew forename, have it as Lipman Eliezer. There has been mention of a Lipman Lipman somewhere. A number of trees on Ancestry have Lewis Eliezer Lipman as the dad
RE a couple of points from this old thread: Joseph Lipman son of Lewis of Phils Buildings married Julia Lipman dau of Levy Lipman in the Novo Synogogue 1849 - does anyone have the full date? Moss/ Moses Lipman b London 1809 and who is in Glasgow in 1841 and 1851 (freecen), died in Scotland in 1864. His death certificate is available on Scotland's people and may possibly name his father and mother - does anyone have the full date for this either? Preferably a copy so I can look at it
Also, for the 1849 marriage, where is this record taken from? Where does it say Lewis Lipman of Phils Buildings?
No idea where this information was found, but you can order a marriage certificate, details below. From the GRO: Marriages Jun 1849 Lipman Joseph London 2 200 Lipman Julia London 2 200 Have you looked on the website below that Annabel mentioned in post #31? Code: http://synagoguescribes.com/blog/
I have been using synagoguescribes, but to no avail I did find one useful burial from 1815 yesterday however that named my 6x great-grandad, Gabriel Franks. No idea where he came from though. His son was Barnet Franks, whose Hebrew name was Baruch Gasdorf and he lived in Whitechapel.
Some trees on Ancestry say Barnet was born c.1750 in Gossmannsdorf an Main, Wurzburg, Germany and that Gabriel was born at the sames place in 1720. No sources quoted though.
